EDFGC5714 – Mathematics, Numeracy and Learner Engagement A Semester Two Lecture Four – Understanding Number (The four Operations) Lecturer - Peter Sellings

Assignment One – Essay & Presentation You must choose a topic that fits with the theme of inclusion. Possible topics could include: The importance of student discussions Formative assessment Personalised Learning The differentiated classroom Making thinking and reasoning visible.

Assignment One – Essay & Presentation Once you have chosen a topic, you need to undertake research, write an 800 word essay and develop a presentation to the class. The presentation must explain why the topic is important (rationale) and give at least one specific example of how the topic can be implemented in the Primary Classroom. The due date for the essay is 6th September.

Learning Intent Consider how we use MAB to develop addition and subtraction algorithms. Explore how the distributive rule can be used for multiplication. Examine division including repeated subtraction as division.

Success Criteria Articulate addition and subtraction using MAB. Demonstrate long multiplication using the distributive rule. Explain the process of division as repeated subtraction.

MAB and Addition The following approaches give an idea of how MAB can be used to add numbers Clip 1 Clip 2 Clip 3

MAB and Addition Practice with a friend to make sure that you can teach using MAB for addition

Addition Approaches such as those shown in the video lead to the algorithm of addition. Make sure that you can accurately apply the algorithm to large numbers and decimals.

MAB and Subtraction The following approaches give an idea of how MAB can be used to subtract numbers Clip 1

MAB and Subtraction Practice with a friend to make sure that you can teach using MAB for subtraction

Subtraction Approaches such as those shown in the video lead to the algorithm of subtraction. Make sure that you can accurately apply the algorithm to large numbers and decimals.

Multiplication After stories, pattern recognition and tables, the distributive rule can be used in to teach more complicated multiplication. So 15 x 5 = 10 x 5 + 5 x 5 and similarly 9 x 22 = 9 x 20 + 9 x 2 This extends to: 15 x 22 = 10 x 22 + 5 x 22 = 10 x 20 + 9 x 2 + 5 x 20 + 5 x 2

Multiplication This then leads to understanding the algorithm of multiplication The most difficult thing for students to understand are the 0’s that are placed in the rule to denote multiplying by a power of 10, but showing them the distributive rule can help. Make sure that you are able to explain long multiplication.

Division Write a short problem (story) that has division as the focus. What are the two different types of stories we could get. Clip 1 After watching the video, classify your problem as quotative or partitive division Discuss

Division The quotative division method is really the basis for division being repeated subtraction. Some of you might have used this method as long division. Short division works in the following way.

Assessment and Vic Curriculum? Think, pair, share What should come first – the task or the assessment? Why? What features do you think are important in an assessment task?

Rich Assessment Tasks A rich assessment task is an assessment tool often used in Primary schools to determine where students are at. Have a go at the rich assessment task called “Computer Games Club” What do you like about this task? What would you change about this task?

Assessment Tasks Writing Rich Assessment Tasks In groups, You will write a rich assessment task for number. The task will have a real life context and must incorporate higher order thinking. Share

Let’s recap & Review Success criteria Thumbs up (Can you answer each question?) Explain addition and subtraction using MAB. Demonstrate long multiplication using the distributive rule. Explain the difference between quotative and partitive division.
