INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

3. International relations 3.1 Diplomatic relations 3.2. United Nations

3.1. Diplomatic relations States maintain diplomatic relations and work through some elements of international law, such as: International treaties Embassies and consulates International organisations

International treaties Are agreements between states, which can be worldwide (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948) or restricted to some states (Concordato con la Santa Sede 1979).

EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES States usually have embassies and consulates in foreign countries in order to provide services to their nationals and to keep diplomatic contacts with that state. An embassy is the larger representation, but a consulate is only a smaller version of the embassy. Consulates in a sense can be called junior embassies.

International organisations Help negotiate between governments and mean to resolve international problems. Worldwide organisations such as UN. Some other organisations work regionally, like the Organisation of American States (OAS), the Arab League, the African Union (AU), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the European Union (EU), or the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

3.1. Diplomatic relations There are also humanitarian laws that affect all the countries: During war time, civilians and prisoners must be protected basing on the Declaration of Geneva (1948). Creation of the International Criminal Court (1998) that is in charge of judging crimes against humanity and genocides (such as Rwanda or former Yugoslavia). It is located in The Hague (The Netherlands).
