Serials A serial is defined as “appearing in a series of continuous parts at regular intervals” (“Serial,” 2002, p. 582). Examples include journals, magazines, newspapers, multi-volume sets (i.e. New York Digest 4th ).
Scholarly journal A scholarly journal Also called academic journal or very often peer-reviewed journal. Includes original research articles, written by researchers and experts in a particular academic discipline” (“Scholarly Journals,” 2014). Examples include: ABA Journal; Behavioral Medicine; BMC Ecology; Art Bulletin; B.E. Journals of Economic Analysis & Policy and Advances in Economic Analysis & Policy. Many of these journals are available via EBSCOhost Databases.
Newspaper A newspaper is a “regular publication, usually daily or weekly, containing news, opinions, or advertising” (“Newspaper,” 2002, p. 429). Examples include: Syracuse Post Standard, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.
Magazine A magazine is a “periodical publication containing stories or articles” (“Magazine,” 2002, p. 383). Examples include: Time; Newsweek; Health, and Soap Opera Digest.
Similarities Scholarly Journal Newspaper Magazine Contain articles Issue & volume numbers Published on a regular frequency pattern
Differences Scholarly Journal Newspaper Magazine Published by a professional body (i.e. university). Articles contain studies regarding specific research topics. These have been reviewed by peers within the profession. Contain articles relating to a general audience (i.e. The Post-Standard or The Wall Street Journal). Contain articles that are for a general audience (i.e. Time or Health) Usually identified by volume & issue number. May or may not have volume & issue numbers. Usually contains volume or issue numbers. Published on a monthly pattern. Usually published daily, weekly, or monthly. Can be published monthly, weekly, daily, bi monthly etc.

Scholarly Journal “While the APA style was developed specifically for articles published in American Psychological Association journals and publications, APA style is widely used today by students and researchers in many different disciplines” (Lewis, 2008, p. 2).
Newspaper “If you want to bring as much money as possible to the concept of creating homes that are more green and providing work, do it through a more direct manner” (Goldberg, 2009, p. A7).
Magazine Mark Zuckerberg explains “ What people want isn’t complete privacy…It’s that they want control over what they share and what they don’t” (Fletcher, 2010, p. 35).
