The use of a real time analyzer during a single brief inhalation-exhalation of methane (CH4), acetylene (C2H2), and carbon monoxide (CO). The use of a real time analyzer during a single brief inhalation-exhalation of methane (CH4), acetylene (C2H2), and carbon monoxide (CO). The three gas concentrations are in the upper panel (CH4 on top, C2H2 in the middle, and CO on the bottom), lung volume is in the lower panel, and data are plotted over time. Alveolar volume is calculated from CH4 dilution, pulmonary capillary blood flow from C2H2 uptake, and diffusing capacity from CO uptake.
