A Good Presentation The Presenter The Slideshow Tips and Advice by Rodolfo Badilla, M.Sc.

The Basics The speaker: speaks Slides: do not speak 1. Characteristics of a Quality Slideshow Who is Who? The Basics The speaker: speaks Slides: do not speak Audio Visuals help. You do. YOU speak.

A GOOD PRESENTATION A GOOD PRESENTATION SHOULD HELP THE PRESENTATOR PRESENT IN A GOOD WAY. THIS IS TO SAY NOT TO REPEAT REPEATED WORDS BECAUSE REPETION IS VERY DISGUSTING. PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO READ IN A PRESENTATION. PRESENTATORS SHOULD BE ABLE TO SPEAK ABOUT THEIR TOPIC FLUENTLY WITHOUT HAVING TO READ FROM A DOCUMENT. MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT A PRESENTATION IS ONLY ABOUT STANDING UP IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE AND PRESENTING WHAT ONE KNOWS. BUT A PRESENTATION –ALSO A SPEECH- IS MUCH MORE THAN THAT. PRESENTING IS ABOUT SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH PEOPLE IN A CLEAR WAY, MAKING SURE PEOPLE ARE UNDERSTANDING AND MAKING GOOD USE OF THE TIME OF YOUR PRESENTATION.

WATCH YOUR SPELLING AND FORMAT The independence Of Costa Rica. Costa Rica independenced from Spain in september 15, 1821.  Unlike independence in other contries, it wasn't a very significant event at the time, since this country had functioned apart from the Capitanía General of Guatemala for a long time.

4. Use English. Do not make up. (Independenced) WATCH YOUR SPELLING AND FORMAT 1. In headers, capitalize each content word, never function words. The Independence of Costa Rica 2. Do not punctuate headers. Don’t use sentences. 3. Keep format all across. (Font, Size, Colors) Consistency 4. Use English. Do not make up. (Independenced) 5. Check spelling (15th, Hability)

WATCH FORMAT Use pictures in original size.

- Unless absolutely necessary - “Short but Sweet” DO NOT ABUSE EFFECTS - Unless absolutely necessary - “Short but Sweet” DO NOT EXCEED 15 SLIDES - Simple is best. “Less is more”. - Focus on message, not look. - Learning aches, so simplify it.

The Presenter

MASTER YOUR TOOLS - Know your computer - Familiarize with Projector, Video Beam, Laser Pointer, etc. - Test and practice ahead of time. - Know your audience, classroom, and context.

Your worst opening: “I’m gonna talk about.” “My topic is…” THE OPENING: Engaging the audience Your worst opening: “I’m gonna talk about.” “My topic is…” Use an Attention Getter. Good attention getters are: A question An analogy A reflection An anecdote A joke or funny image (this one’s for experts only) An image projected + comment or reflection A piece of information taken from the news Stats from a respected source of information *Be original but be decent.

BOTTOM LINE: PREPARE THOROUGHLY. DON’T READ!  Speak fluently about the topic. You are the expert.  Reading = I’m stupid / I don’t know!  Be ready for questions. BOTTOM LINE: PREPARE THOROUGHLY.

Be a Presenter Be yourself and enjoy your presentation. Dress properly. Speak slowly and clear. Establish eye contact or watch the wall. Don’t stay. Control your hands. Use them. Don’t be afraid to move (slowly across and back) Speak out. NEVER Memorize. Be yourself and enjoy your presentation. «A speech is a great chance to show what you know.»

Your worst closing: “I’m finished.” “That’s it.” The Closing: Leaving Like a Boss in 3 steps Your worst closing: “I’m finished.” “That’s it.” 1. Lower your voice tone towards the end of your last sentence. By doing so: You set your idea finished. You project security and control. You wrap up the entire presentation. You get the audience’s attention. You establish the truth of things. The human ear reacts to this with a sensation of completeness. *Be original but be decent.

The Closing: Leaving Like a Boss in 3 steps 2. Ask if there are questions. Experts and compromised presenters care for listeners’ questions. 3. Say “Thank You”. This is more than thanking. This means “That’s it!”, “I’m finished!”, “Answering questions is over!” “I’m walking out now!”

Thank You! Q/A
