Could Objective Tests Be Used to Measure Fatigue in Patients With Advanced Cancer?  Gustavo Schvartsman, MD, Minjeong Park, PhD, Diane D. Liu, MS, Sriram Yennu, MD, Eduardo Bruera, MD, David Hui, MD, MSc  Journal of Pain and Symptom Management  Volume 54, Issue 2, Pages 237-244 (August 2017) DOI: 10.1016/j.jpainsymman.2016.12.343 Copyright © 2017 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Terms and Conditions

Fig. 1 Cancer-related fatigue is a multifactorial symptom with various contributors, such as progressive cancer, cancer treatments, pro-inflammatory cytokines, direct neurologic dysfunction by cytotoxic treatments, sleep disruption, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis disturbances, deconditioning, nutritional compromise, and mood and emotional disorders. Many of these contributors may be associated with each other. We hypothesized that subjective assessment of fatigue correlates with objective measures of patients' muscle and nutritional status.
