Hezekiah and Josiah’s Reforms Compared Focus was on putting first commandments first— “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:3) “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image . . .thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them” (Ex. 20:4-5)

20:4-5) “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.” (Ex. 20:7)

The Hebrew of Exodus 20:7 reads: “Thou shalt not take” [Heb., nasa, meaning “to lift up” and used in a variety of ways including . . . ‘to accept,’ ‘to hold up,’ ‘to respect or regard,’ ‘to swear to’ ‘to yield to’ “the name of the LORD [Heb., Jehovah] your God in vain” [Heb. Shav, meaning, . . . “useless,” “not real,” “thoughtless,” “lightly”

The following are appropriate translations of Exodus 20:7— “Thou shalt not accept Jehovah’s name thoughtlessly” “Thou shalt not regard Jehovah’s name lightly” “Thou shalt not hold up Jehovah’s name lightly” “Thou shalt not sware falsely [i.e., promise] in Jehovah’s name”

The following are appropriate translations of Exodus 20:7— “Thou shalt not accept Jesus Christ’s name thoughtlessly” “Thou shalt not regard Jesus Christ’s name lightly” “Thou shalt not hold up Jesus Christ’s name lightly” “Thou shalt not sware falsely [i.e., promise] in Jesus Christ’s name

Psalms 34:1-4 1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. 4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Ezekiel 36

Ezekiel 36 Vss. 1-7 God speaks against the heathen who have taken possession of the land promised to the fathers.

Ezekiel 36 Vss. 1-7 God speaks against the heathen who have taken possession of the land promised to the fathers. Vss. 8-15 A promise to the house of Israel, they will return to the land of promise.

Ezekiel 36 Vss. 1-7 God speaks against the heathen who have taken possession of the land promised to the fathers. Vss. 8-15 A promise to the house of Israel, they will return to the land of promise. Vss. 16-24 When the house of Israel lived in the promised land, they defiled the land by living in their own ways and worshipping idols (i.e., false gods, or the wisdom of the world [see 1 Ne. 11:35]). The Lord scattered them because they “profaned” (unholy or sacred) His holy name. But He promises He will “sanctify [His] great name” “before” the eyes of the heathen. He will do this by gathering Israel from all “countries” back to the promised land.

Ezekiel 36 Vss. 25-38 God will bring about a clean and holy people. They will become God’s people and He will be their God.
