Identify the main concepts Brainstorm synonyms Keyword Searching Identify the main concepts Brainstorm synonyms Look at the titles, subject lines, & abstracts There’s a Library Guide!! The databases cannot recognize context, they only know word matching.

Bullying … prevention … elementary Keyword Searching What are the best strategies for bullying prevention in elementary schools? Bullying … prevention … elementary What interventions help Mexican American students stay in school? Identify main concepts and brainstorm synonyms. Concrete concepts work best. Research Beyond the Walden Library Using Google Scholar effectively searches broadly can be difficult to shape precise searches overwhelming number of results to review no peer-review limiter Link Google Scholar to the Walden Library Click on the “cited by” link of an article Verify peer-reviewed status in Ulrich’s Evaluating Resources

Overview of the Literature Review Theoretical/Conceptual Framework Books Encyclopedias Research Method Research Articles Current Literature Other subject areas Teaching that research is not linear- On a sheet of paper have students draw a line that represents their research process. Students can choose to share their drawing or you can start discussing how research is not linear.

Dissertations Dissertation Database Look at completed dissertations or project studies Organization and flow Search by advisor or chair

Staying Organized Search Logs Word Docs Excel spreadsheet Literature Review Matrices Keep track of what you find

Keys to Successful Online Research No single collection or search engine will cover everything. Start in the Library collections and then go beyond. Google Scholar offers wide-coverage – but limited ability to refine searches and no peer-review limiter. Not all articles will be freely available online; know your tools for tracking down the full text. Use citation chaining and reference mining Look at dissertations Keep track of searches
