Interdisciplinary Leadership Doctorate Program Information Session 2020-2021 Cohort 9

INLD Program Mission The purpose of the Governors State University Interdisciplinary Leadership doctoral degree is to produce practitioner-scholars who are advanced leaders in the education (Higher Education Administration and Superintendent) and Not-For-Profit/Social Entrepreneurship fields. GSU doctoral graduates from this program will provide leadership and expert service throughout the GSU region, and beyond, in school, family, community, and cultural contexts. They will strengthen the links between child, family, community, school and government agencies in planning multi-systemic interventions that will have the most positive impact on the lives of children and adults, while simultaneously strengthening families and supporting communities in educating, serving, and protecting all citizens.

INLD Program Objectives Learning Objectives of the Ed. D. in Interdisciplinary Leadership Provide advanced graduate-level instruction and experiences in all of the following content areas: 1) Leadership .. through a social status/social identity perspective .. ethical and legal considerations 2) Theories pertaining to the principles and practices of leadership, fiscal responsibility, and environmental sustainability; .. teaching theory .. social change theory 3) Applied Research .. design and implementation of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies 4) Using Data .. models and methods of assessment and evaluation

INLD Program Characteristics Interdisciplinary = students from the different concentrations will take their core courses together; faculty from all colleges will provide instruction, mentoring, and academic advising; capstone committees will comprise faculty and practitioners from different disciplines Primarily on-line, with some hybrid experiences (on-line course delivery with some instruction on-campus) Cohort model: students admitted to the Fall 2020 cohort will remain in the concentration they applied for (except for very unusual circumstances) “Real-life” Inquiry: through evidence-based/applied research, students will identify and address issues, dynamics, and phenomena in schools and society

INLD Admissions Requirements Statement of personal interest and goals regarding the Interdisciplinary Leadership Doctorate Program, including a vita or resume Documentation (transcript) of a master’s degree from an accredited educational institution, indicating a 3.0 GPA or higher The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or the Millers Analogy Test (MAT) is required. SUPT applicants must take GRE only. Three recommendations (academic references preferred and professional references are also accepted) Successful interview with the Admissions Committee (an assessment may be incorporated to evaluate level of comprehension and technical skills associated with academic writing)

INLD Important Dates Applications Due: Review of complete applications will begin in January, 2020 with final packets due by April 1, 2020 for Fall 2020 admission. Early admission deadline is January 31, 2020. Early admission is required for graduate assistantship opportunities for Fall 2020. Mandatory Program Orientation: Tentatively scheduled for August 2020 and January 2021 at Governors State University - room TBA Classes begin: August 31, 2020

INLD Program Requirements Class # 1 (full semester) Class # 2 (full semester) Students in must register for 6 graduate course hours each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) Students must attain B grades or better throughout the Program (courses can be retaken) Students must complete coursework within seven years Students must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours Students must pass a written qualifying exam before registering for the Capstone, culminating project

INLD Core courses Research, Data Analysis & Decision Making (15 weeks) Theory and Ethics of Leadership (15 weeks) Finance and External Funding (15 weeks) Strategic Planning, Collaboration & Sustainability (15 weeks) Communication Strategies for Effective Orgs (15 weeks) Change, Diversity, and Global Issues (15 weeks)

INLD Qualifying Exams and Capstone Qualifying exam: Written exam covering the curriculum core courses and concentration courses; graded by an interdisciplinary team of faculty Capstone: a quantitative and/or qualitative inquiry in an interdisciplinary topic of interest (examples of include quantitative research, in-depth case studies, program evaluation, real-life problem-solving projects, or an extensive critical literature review); comprises 9 credits -- Capstone Seminar (3 credits), and Capstone I and II Project courses (6 credits)

INLD Student Advising All doctoral students will be assigned an academic advisor and a program coordinator within their respective concentrations. The Academic Advisor (Ms. Carla Johnson, M.A.) will assist with the coordination of the student’s plan of study and necessary paperwork that is to be filed with the appropriate GSU office for dealing with admission, candidacy, and graduation matters. The program coordinators will assist with the identification of faculty advisors for the doctoral student in his or her area of concentration, and through the qualifying exam, and capstone project process. As the student‘s specialized interest(s) develop, the faculty advisor may change and may not necessarily be within their area of concentration.
