FCAT 2.0 Review Classifying living Things Mr. Perez FCAT 2.0 Review Classifying living Things

What is classification? Classification is the organization of living things based on similar characteristics. Carolus Linnaeus is known as the ”Father of Taxonomy” We still use his classification system today Binomial nomenclature: using the Genus and species to name organisms This allows scientists all over the world to use the same name for an organism

Taxonomy Hierarchy Broadest: Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Most specific: Species

Domain Three domains exist:

Kingdoms

Practice Question Mariella is studying a new type of organism that she has found. She observes that the cells of the organism have ribosomes, mitochondria, and lysosomes. She also observes that the cells do not have a cell wall. What type of organism is Mariella most likely to have found? A plant A fungus An animal A prokaryote

Practice Question Mushrooms, bread molds, and yeasts are classified together in the fungi kingdom. Specific characteristics are used to classify these organisms. Which of the following is a characteristic used to classify these organisms as fungi? A. They are parasites B. They are unicellular C. They are prokaryotes D. They are heterotrophs

Practice Question Which group contains organisms that are unicellular, prokaryotic, and can cause strep throat or e. coli infections? A. Eukarya B. Fungi C. Plants D. Bacteria
