What the zebrafish core facility can offer you: The zebrafish core facility at Karolinska Institutet Bringing your basic and translational research to the next level What the zebrafish core facility can offer you: Embryos and adult fish of various wildtype and transgenic lines Husbandry and breeding of your own zebrafish lines Three complete work stations for microinjections Work stations for bright-field and epifluorescence microscopy Training in various zebrafish specific techniques like microinjection, transplantation, in situ hybridization, drug exposures etc. Support in project planning Practical assistance with your experiments Equipment of the zebrafish core facility Housing for ~ 60.000 adult zebrafish Large nursery for embryonic zebrafish Large quarantine laboratory 2 wet laboratories 1 dry laboratory 3 work stations for microinjection 2 work stations for epifluorescence microscopy 2 microcapillary puller The zebrafish – a brief introduction Small, tropical freshwater fish originating from the Himalayan region Embryos transparent, allowing for in vivo/real time analysis Easy genomic manipulation Extremely fast development (beating heart after 24 hours, freely swimming after 72 hours!) Powerful model for developmental biology Clinically relevant model for translational research and drug discovery Only vertebrate model suitable for high-throughput screens The zebrafish core facility – an overview With a capacity of housing ~ 60.000 adult zebrafish in a sophisticated and highly-controlled environment, our zebrafish core facility is the largest facility in Sweden. In 2016, we have provided amongst others more than 135.000 embryos to 25 research groups at Karolinska Institutet. We have currently 4 animal technicians that can assist you with your project. Why zebrafish? Proven similarity of developmental circuits and processes to mammalian systems (e.g. hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, organogenesis etc.) The transparent zebrafish embryos develop ex-utero, offering unique in vivo/real time imaging possibilities Many transgenic lines facilitate imaging The fully sequenced genome is easily accessible, fast transient knock-downs are rapidly possible The past decade has proven its clinical relevance for various major health issues including cancer and neurodegeneration Unique model to study processes in physiological hypoxia (e.g. tumor dissemination, drug profiling) The only vertebrate model suitable for high-throughput drug discovery The core facility management has more than 10 years experience of working with the model organism zebrafish and a large international network in the zebrafish community. We will do everything we can to support your project.
