Leadership Reflections Leadership Development 4-2 b

For Thought What is Leadership?

Leadership Experience Open your Knob Journals to paragraph 1-2 on page 4. Read what it says about a “frame of reference.” You are going to learn much about leadership at The Citadel, but you all have some leadership frame of reference already. Think about the experience you already have had with leaders and leadership. What do leaders do? What are characteristics of good leadership practices? How about bad leadership practices? Who has been a past good leader in your life and why?

Leadership Experience Record your thoughts about your leadership frame of reference on page 5. Don’t worry about your definition of leadership. We’ll come back to that later. Be ready to discuss your observations with the class.

Leadership Experience Both your positive and negative leadership experiences are the foundation which your leadership development will at The Citadel will be built upon.

Leadership Definitions There are many different definitions of leadership.

Leadership Definition / Quotes Great leaders come from all walks of life with a diversity of backgrounds. The following are a sampling of quotes that will be applicable to your foundational experience as a Fourthclass Cadet. These quotes are the result of different definitions of leadership based on different viewpoints and life experiences. What do they mean to you today?

Leadership Quotes A friend of mine characterizes leaders simply like this: "Leaders don't inflict pain. They bear pain." - Max DePree

Leadership Quotes “Leadership is not a person or a position. It is a complex moral relationship between people based on trust, obligation, commitment, emotion, and a shared vision of the good.” —Joanne Ciulla Professor and Director The Institute for Ethical Leadership Rutgers, University

Leadership Quotes I start with the premise that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers - Ralph Nader

Leadership Quotes

Leadership Quotes Lead and inspire people. Don't try to manage and manipulate people. Inventories can be managed but people must be lead. - Ross Perot

Leadership Quotes

Leadership Quotes The very essence of leadership is its purpose. And the purpose of leadership is to accomplish a task. That is what leadership does--and what it does is more important than what it is or how it works. - Colonel Dandridge M. Malone

Leadership Quotes No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself, or to get all the credit for doing it. - Andrew Carnegie

Leadership Quotes The art of leading, in operations large or small, is the art of dealing with humanity, of working diligently on behalf of men, of being sympathetic with them, but equally, of insisting that they make a square facing toward their own problems. - S. L. A. Marshall Men Against Fire

Leadership Quotes

Leadership – A Definition Definitions are important to communicate a common understanding. Creating a definition for “Leadership” will help you take ownership of this concept Leadership is best described as a process that involves relationship and influence Leader Situation Subordinate Leadership

Leadership– Your Definition Go back to page 5 of your Journal. Think about the quotations and other parts of our discussion and write your definition of leadership. Be ready to share this with the rest of the class

Different Definitions of Leadership Leadership is influencing people – by providing purpose, direction and motivation – while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. Leadership is the process of followers and the leader engaging in reciprocal influence to achieve a shared purpose. Leadership is all about getting people to work together to make things happen that might not otherwise occur or prevent things from happening that ordinarily would take place. Leadership:  The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.        - Dwight D. Eisenhower Leaders are not born.  They are made.  They are made just like anything else. . . through hard work.  That's the price we  have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal. - Vince Lombardi

Qualities of a Leader From your experience you can probably pick out who is a “good leader” Coach, teacher, mentor, pastor, civic leader What is it about that individual – their personal qualities that make them stand out? What did you learn from their example of leadership?

Group Work Refer to what you recorded in your Journal about the characteristics of a good leader and good leadership practices. Work as a small group to develop 3 to 5 key qualities you will want to see from your leaders Be ready to share these with the rest of the class

The Citadel’s Characteristics of a Principled Leader Lead with humility Embrace a true, authentic self Act and speak with courage Develop and value people and resources Empower and hold others accountable Respect others by building trust and learning from mistakes Serve others before self From the Leader Development Program
