Statistical Analysis of the Best Players to Ever Play in the NHL Presented: January 18/2007
In my project I compared the career statistics of 8 NHL players. Wayne Gretzky - Steve Yzerman Mario Lemieux - Jaromir Jagr Sidney Crosby - Alexandre Mogilny Alexandre Ovechkin - Joe Sakic Brendan Shanahan - Mats Sundin The following graphs I have made will compare the statistics of the veteran players all who have played at least 15 NHL season to the rookie seasons of Crosby and Ovechkin.
Graph Analysis: Find IQR of Best Season: IQR= 114- 52 = 62 This value measures the spread of the data and shows that the middle 50% of the data lies in this range.
Graph Analysis: The graph compares the point totals of the players top 5 seasons, it shows how good Lemieux and Gretzky were. Their averages are 40-100 points higher than the average of 6 of the NHL best players to ever play.
Graph Analysis: Mean: 332/8 = 41.5 Standard Deviation: 14.7 These numbers tell us how consistent the players were at scoring goals.
Graph Analysis: This graph shows how effective each player is at scoring goals on a shots/goal basis. It also shows that a player like Ovechkin is a very dangerous player because with a 8.17 shots/goal ratio it tells me he shoots often and from everywhere. This makes it hard for goalies to predict when he will shoot.
Graph Analysis: This graph shows us why all these veteran players were great goal scorers in their careers because took a lot of shots. All of them took at least 1250 shots in 5 seasons that’s an average of 250 shots per season.
Graph Analysis: This graph shows me how effective each of the players were in a game to game basis because it tracks the points/game of each of the players. Lemieux was very effective in this season because he had the highest points/game ratio.
Conclusion: Through my collecting and analysis of NHL statistics I have learned just how good players like Lemieux and Gretzky really were. I don’t think we will ever see their records be broken even buy Crosby or Ovechkin but you never know.
