Presentation in the workshop on Eco-friendly Mobility for Clean Air Date – 14th June 2019 Presentation in the workshop on Eco-friendly Mobility for Clean Air BEST – Status & Future Plans Date – 15th June 2019`

About BEST – Transport Statistics (March 19) Depots 27 Fleet ( Single deck, Midi, Double deck operated on CNG, Diesel and Electric) 3205 Daily Avg. effective kms. 4.4 Lakhs Passengers/day 25 Lakhs Earnings/day Rs.2.54crores No. of routes (Ordinary, Limited, Express) 409 Bus Stations 57 Bus Chowkies/terminii 108

Fleet transition 2017 1998 2005 2018 Electric Midi Buses inducted Air Conditioned bus service introduced 2005 CNG buses inducted in fleet 2018 Hybrid buses provided by MMRDA.

Shift from HSD to CNG to Electric buses Environment friendly CNG fuel type buses inducted in the year 2005-06 CNG Midi buses procured in 2007. CNG bus fleet augmented from 193 buses in the year 2005- 2006 to the present 1851 buses. CNG buses constitute 58% of the fleet. CNG filling station developed at 14 depots. Electric Midi buses Launched from 10.11.2017. Noise and pollution free. Presently 6 buses in the fleet. 40 Midi A.C. buses and 40 Midi Non-A.C. buses being procured under FAME – I. Charging stations developed at 2 depots. Hybrid buses 25 buses provided by MMRDA. Operated in BKC area. Diesel series hybrid technology Saves 30% in emissions and 28.24% in fuel.

Engineering measures Defective engines overhauled and assembled in dust free environment at the Central workshop. Assembled engines tested on test bed and ensured that engines are properly tuned up and emission is within limit. Overhauled CNG engines are tested at the CNG engine test facility before being put in service. Ultra modern 185 nos. of TATA buses with modern BS-IV diesel engine with auto transmission are operated. All buses are periodically tested for emission norms from RTO approved agency and PUC certificates are maintained as per CMVR rules. Exhaust manifolds, silencer mufflers are promptly changed if found defective. Fuel injectors in case of diesel buses are changed in stipulated kilometers. Fuel injection pumps are overhauled and calibrated in central workshop with high standard of quality.

Our Vision To meet every Bus need in the city Induction of Environment Friendly buses (including AC buses) Judicious mix of different size of buses for better coverage Affordable, competitive and economical fares Well entrenched reliable network Customer friendly technological interventions such passenger app, ETA availability, Inter-operable Common Mobility card for fare collection This shall surely help in reducing Emission levels in the city

BEST – Way forward……. Increase in the fleet shall lead to: Increased supply of buses and improvement in the frequency of services Procurement of smaller midi and mini buses (A.C. & Non-A.C.) shall : Cater un-served pockets. Provide feeder services to metro. Improve speed and turnaround time. Operational flexibility. Compete effectively with the growing menace of Share-A-Taxi and Share-A-Rickshaw Procurement of CNG and zero-emission electric vehicles. Modern and younger passenger friendly fleet. Not mere supply – but service quality guaranteed. Contract being designed with an emphasis on quality and reliability Well defined service and payment standards linked to delivery of service. Timely operation, ideal headway and providing real time information to passengers.

BEST – Way forward……. Complete Overhaul of the existing Network Revisiting the Fare structure – Making it competitive and affordable Increase fleet from the present 3200 to 6000 Inducting nearly 1800 AC buses in the fleet Operation of around 2500 small i.e. Mini and Midi buses in the fleet Future induction of only Electric or CNG run buses Plans for operating Metro feeder connections Introduction of Technology Intelligent Transport Management System Automatic Fare Collection System

Timelines for implementation Electric buses (80) - Work order issued. Induction by this month end. Entire fleet by the end of the year Midi/Mini buses (450) - Commencement order issued. First lot of 100 buses by mid September and the remaining balance by the year end Electric (500) - Proposal being submitted to GOI within a fortnight Midi/Mini (1000) - RFP to be issued within a fortnight
