Savings and Sustainability Non Pay Savings We have a responsibility, both to our students and to taxpayers, to demonstrate that we are delivering value for money.  We need to be confident that we are spending money sensibly and appropriately, and in ways which enable us to continue to transform lives. - Deborah Harry, Chief Finance and Planning Officer Transforming Lives update - July 2018

£4m Reduce print spend Make travel savings Reduce purchase card spend The University has a Non-Pay cost saving target How can you contribute? £4m Reduce print spend Make travel savings Reduce purchase card spend Consider a more cost effective alternative Lower consultancy costs

SHU's annual 'non-pay' spend Premises; Furniture & Equipment £14.4m £3m Staff Travel & Expenses Computers & IT £11m External Professional Services £3.9m Printing & Stationery £1.9m Internal and External Catering £1.1m Staff Development & Training £2m £0.9m Postage & Telephones Subscriptions & Misc. £2.6m

University print unit statistics 111,847 business cards printed The print unit completed 10,909 print jobs 26,257 posters made University print unit statistics 17/18 154 miles of stitched booklets (laid end to end) That's 11,886,944 pages printed The University and the Higher Education sector in general is facing challenging financial pressures over the next few years, with tuition fees flat in cash terms, and wider pressures on UK and international recruitment.   We have a responsibility, both to our students and to taxpayers, to demonstrate that we are delivering value for money.  We need to be confident that we are spending money sensibly and appropriately, and in ways which enable us to continue to Transform Lives.  We spend around £100 million every year on goods and services, including work to maintain our estate or provide our IT, travel and subsistence costs, printing and stationery, and much more. To support the delivery of our strategy we have agreed that we should aim to achieve a £4 million saving on these areas of spend in 2018/19, and budgets have now been set on this basis.  If we are to succeed in this, we need to embed a change in culture around our spending habits; by scrutinising what we spend money on, and challenging ourselves on whether it's genuinely necessary. Paper supplied to the University by the print unit would reach Belushya Guba - Russia

Sustainability Statistics This equates to a 15% saving in green house gasses and means we are on target for a 25% reduction by 2020/21 Sustainability Statistics In 2017/18 University staff printed 24.5 million pages, which in turn costs the University £320k SHU has cut its CO2 emissions by 12% vs 2016 / 17 in 2017/18 we recycled 28% of our waste and have already surpassed our 2020/21 target of 25% Commuting to work by bike is up 77% and by foot 136% from 2015/16 71% of our recycled material is sent to Veolia's Energy recovery site and turned into heat to heat some of City Campus through the District Heating System If these pages were stacked high their height would be equivalent to 67 Owen Buildings Our carbon emissions have reduced year on year and are 43% lower than the baseline year of 2005/6

We booked over 6000 nights in hotels 750 nights in Hong Kong and 500 nights in London If flights were booked 15-30 days before travel the university could save £50,000 We achieved over 85k of savings in 2017/18 by using the Travel Management Company air fares Approximately 2,000 flights are booked per annum The University makes around 11,520 travel transactions a year Our top overseas destination is Hong Kong Almost 7,000 rail bookings are made via the Travel Management Company If anytime tickets were switched to advance saver tickets the University could save over £90,000 If rail bookings were made 15 days in advance the university could save over £65,000 Travel Statistics
