WG6 Activity Report Marseille 9th May 2019

The EGEA suspension test standard In the last year the main activity of the group was to pursue the development of a new suspension testing method that could be adopted as a single reference at European level. We did this translating the features of the minimum Phase- shift testing method as developed by Tsymberov (SAE tech. paper 960735 of 1996) into its practical application: The EGEA suspension test standard SPECSUS2018

One slide only to refresh the idea behind: The “road adhesion”, is indicative of the safety of the vehicle, but it is unreliable in determining the performance of the dampers and unfit for new super-light city vehicles and new suspension and tyre technology (e.g. run-flat tyres). The angular difference (phase shift) between the absolute sinusoidal position of the suspension tester plate and the sinusoidal vertical tire contact force between the tire and the suspension tester plate places a role in evaluating the quality of the tested damper in the vehicle. The new test principle leads to a very easy, quick and reliable inspection test with simple pass/fail criteria: if the minimum phase shift falls below 35° it is a fail.

Only to remember the 4 key reasons to adopt it EU-wide… Single test method applicable across all European Member States for roadworthiness testing Minimum change to existing installations of suspension tester design/specification or for new installations Minimised costs due to a higher volumes of existing design and functions Existing GOCA database of test results ensures benchmarking (from 2011 ~25M vehicles tested)

Now we have the final version of the spec! What we did: Removed references to EUSAMA and GOCA EUSAMA replaced by max relative force amplitude Removed details to specific implementations (e.g. Inverter). «What vs How» Deep analysis of each technical details nothing missed or misunderstood Redefined absolute and relative criteria Type Approval procedure & On field Calibration procedure Definition of the calibration tool & SW simulator / signal generator

The SPECSUS2018 standard includes a Signal Generator (SG) to be used for testing equipment and assessing reference systems useful to perform equipment type approvals. EGEA will grant Member Associations’ Member Company the license for the use of the SG free of charge through the subscription of the HEADS OF THE TERMS OF USE LICENSE.

What we still have to do: Look for a GOGA endorsement (PASCAL BUEKENHOUDT) Feedback from metrological laboratories (e.g. ESZ, UTAC) about the possibility to validate the reference tool through an EGEA open source SW signal generator Involve CITA and presentation to the National Authorities Market the standard: promo Video Involve shock absorber manufacturers Everything before to approach the EU commission

A quick update on the EN17003: standard for the safety of roller brake testers for vehicles (> 3,5 tons GVW) Mainly just a complaint about the form in which the document is written was raised by the CEN verifier (English and incorrect layout) and a rewrite must be made shortly. The new timeline for this review brings to the end of 2019.
