Pedigrees A tool used to trace inherited traits in humans A “family tree” for a specific trait A chart showing the presence or absence of a trait

Symbols on a pedigree chart: Circle = female Square = male

Symbols on a pedigree chart: A ½ shaded circle or square = a person who carries the trait A completely filled circle or square = a person who has the trait A circle or square that is NOT shaded = a person who is not a carrier or a person with that trait

Symbols on a pedigree chart: The vertical lines and brackets = connect the parents to their children A horizontal line = a marriage between a male and female
