Work Placement Program 2019/8/13 Work Placement Program A company employs an IEE for three months. The IEE demonstrates their skills and competencies. IEEs have competencies assessed internally by their supervisor ongoing and formally at the end of three months. Partnerships were key to success. Partners include: ISANS Engineers Nova Scotia Engineers Canada NS Dept. of Labour & Advanced Education Local Employers Employers Cost-effective solution to recruiting, training and retaining potential employees. Increased workforce diversity and innovative thinking. Increased capacity. Promotes positive public image. IEE’s Completion of a work-site based competency assessment. Demonstrate their skills and abilities to a local employer. Obtain a valuable reference for their job search. Identify skill gaps to make plans for further training.

Acceptance of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE Exam) 2019/8/13 Acceptance of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE Exam) Recently approved as alternative method of confirming academic qualifications. US based exam, administered by NCEES in online format. Benefits of the change can include lower cost, better timing, much better availability, and better security and invigilation. In many cases it can also allow applicants to get licensed easier and faster, as the exam is offered throughout Canada, the US, and in Germany in Pearson Vue approved test centers. I am pleased to announce that our Board of Examiners has accepted the use of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as an alternative method of confirming the academic qualifications of applicants. This is a great step forward, and brings us more in line with other Canadian engineering regulatory associations. This change occurred through a motion passed at a Board of Examiners policy workshop held on July 6.   The exam will be provided through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). The NCEES is a national non-profit organization that develops, administers and scores the examinations used for engineering and surveying licensure in the United States. In the United States, the FE exam is part of the requirements for receiving an engineering license. The FE is a computer-based exam which covers subject matter taught in a typical Washington Accord accredited undergraduate engineering degree program. The benefits of this new route to licensure can be extremely significant, especially for our foreign-trained applicants. From an applicant perspective the benefits of the change can include lower cost, better timing, much better availability, and better security and invigilation. In many cases it can also allow applicants to get licensed easier and faster, as the exam can be offered anywhere in the world where an approved test center is available. From an association perspective, the staff effort and the direct cost of providing confirmatory exams will be reduced. Engineers Nova Scotia has already signed an agreement with NCEES so that the exam can be offered through our association, effective immediately.
