GCSE Area of a Circle = πr2 π = 3.14 π ≈ 3 Edexcel Foundation: May 2017 Paper 1, Q18 1 Jenny has a lawn in the shape of a circle of radius 10m. She is going to cover the lawn in fertilizer. Fertilizer is sold in bags. Each bag of fertilizer will cover 26m2 of lawn. 10m Work out an estimate for the number of bags of fertilizer Jenny needs. You must show your working. Area of a Circle = πr2 π = 3.14 π ≈ 3 Estimate of Area = π x 102 = 3 x 100 = 300m2 Estimate for bag = 30m2 300m2 ÷ 20m2 = 10 bags 10 bags (4) (b) Is your estimate for part (a) an underestimate or an overestimate? Give a reason for your answer. It is an underestimate, I have rounded π down so the area will be larger. I have rounded up the quantity of fertilizer in each bag. (1) (Total for Question 1 is 5 marks)
