Nutrition and Food Sciences Case Studies: Team-Based Learning Application Activities: Heart Disease Case Kathleen Davis, PhD, RDN Assignment Instructions Feedback on Assignment Background/Assignment Objectives JJ tells you that her doctor has prescribed a statin but she wants to try lifestyle first and doesn’t want to take it. What is the best response? Take it. Your doctor told you to. Talk about that with your doctor. I’m your dietitian. Tell me why you feel that way. Have you discussed this with your doctor? You’re right. You should always try lifestyle measures first. Discuss: What is the potential advantage to taking the statin even if she tries lifestyle measures? Given her labs, what diet do you think would be the best choice? DASH Ketogenic Low-fat, moderate carbohydrate, high protein Mediterranean Justify your answer: JJ tells you she primarily eats at these places: Del Frisco, Pappas Bros, Nick and Sam’s, Uncle Julio’s. Using one of their on-line menus, make recommendations for her: Primary Feedback: 32/50 students reported that they “strongly agreed or agreed” that team case assignments were “helpful to my learning”. This was up to 16% lower than other methods such as lectures, assignments, and quizzes. Students Preferred Independent Learning: Students were split on preferring to learn independently or in groups (with 24/50 preferring independent learning and 20/50 preferring team learning). Mixed Views of Team Cases: Several students reported liking the team cases a lot, but a few also reported NOT liking team cases, not feeling comfortable because they didn’t choose their own teams, feeling some teammates “took over” discussion, or just being confused. Lessons Learned: Better support of positive team dynamics and better facilitation of discussions may be helpful. Some students don’t like to talk openly about content. They don’t want to hear other opinions, especially if they believe other students are not well-prepared. I will still provide discussion because communicating within a non-self selected team is an essential part of being on a healthcare team. Students in NFS 4103, Medical Nutrition Therapy want to become Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). The purpose of this case was to allow students to apply team knowledge to assess and provide nutrition care to sample patients with CVD. Learning Objectives: Given lipid levels, assess a patient’s risk. Given a case, develop evidence-based interventions for individuals with dyslipidemia and obesity. Assignment Prompt Assignment Instructions Jeniqua J (JJ) is a 58 year-old black, female. She weighs 155 pounds and is 64” tall. Her weight has been stable for the last year, but she used to weigh about 140 pounds prior to being promoted to CFO. She was referred to you by her PCP for weight loss & lipid management. Interview: JJ is very busy, single, and eats out most nights of the week with clients or on her own. She perceives her meals are very rich but “healthier than fast food”. “I eat a lot of vegetables and often order the salad.” Family Hx: father died at age 55 of heart attack. Mother still living (83). Labs: TChol 260, LDL 155, HDL 70, TG 170 Using the Case Assignment Prompt discuss each of the following questions with your team and decide on the BEST answer. Interpret her lab values. She has: Diabetes Dyslipidemia (moderate to high risk) Hyperlipidemia (moderate to high risk) Hyperlipidemia (but low risk due to high HDL) Justify your answer:
