How much sugar should we have? But how do we know how much sugar we should eat in a day? If you are 4, 5, 6 years old put your hand up? You’re recommended to have no more than 5 cubes of sugar a day. If you are 7-10 put your hand up? You’re recommended to have no more than 6 cubes of sugar a day. Anyone 11 years and over (including adults!)? You’re allowed to eat 7 cubes of sugar a day. This amount includes the sugar that is already in your food and any that is added. Its easy to have too much sugar in just one snack, meal or drink … shall we find out how? 4 to 6 year olds 7 to 10 year olds 11 years +

Q.1. How much sugar? 6 cubes! Q: Who wants to have a go at guessing how much sugar there is in a bar of chocolate? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 6 cubes! So that’s more than recommended for the whole day for a 4-6 year old and a 7-10 year old!

Q.2. How much sugar? 8 grams Q: Who wants to have a go at guessing how much sugar there is in a bolognaise pasta pot? How many grams of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are about 8 grams - so that’s a healthy choice. What other health factors need to be taken into account?

Q.3. How much sugar? 5 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a sugary yogurt? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 5 cubes. That’s the recommended daily limit for a 4-6 year old. What would be a better alternative?

Q.4. How much sugar? 15 grams Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a large chocolate cookie? How many grams of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 15 grams. That’s half the recommended daily limit for your age group! What other substances is the cookie high in?

Q.5. How much sugar? 5 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a juice drink? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 5 cubes. What would be a more healthy drink option?

Q.6. How much sugar? 4.3 grams Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a ham and cheese panini? How many grams of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 4.3 grams. Not bad but what about fat content and overall calories?

Q.7. How much sugar? 2 cubes! Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a juice drink? How many cubes of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 2 cubes. Which cereals contain less sugar?

Q.4. How much sugar? 6 grams Q: How much sugar do we think there is in a sausage roll? How many grams of sugar do you think there are in this? A: There are 6 grams. That’s OK as part of a meal but consider the extra fat and calories – is it a suitable snack/extra?
