Annual Catch Estimates What are they ? “…are simply the total catches by species for a fishing fleet covering a calendar year“ Catch => METRIC TONS “Number of active vessels by size class” also required ACE are a WCPFC reporting obligation

Annual Catch Estimates WCPFC essential requirements (obligations) Annual catch by GEAR and SPECIES No. of ACTIVE Vessels by size class Calendar Year Main area is the WCPFC CONVENTION AREA Prepared for the NATIONAL FLEET The deadline is 30th APRIL each year How they were determined Estimates of DISCARDs now required ... More details: https://www.wcpfc.int/doc/data-01/scientific-data-be-provided-commission-revised-wcpfc4-6-7-and-9 Main tuna species, billfish, and shark

Annual catch estimates provided for the WCPFC Convention Area

Annual catch estimates Subarea needed – stock ares Annual catch estimates must be provided for the other areas in some cases.

Annual Catch Estimates Why ? Concise representation of actual catch (total removals) Snapshot comparison between years, fleets, gears, fisheries, etc. Concise indication of the trends over time Indication of all data collected in the tuna fishery Used to produce economic indicators (value of catch) All contained in the WCPFC Tuna Fishery Yearbook Totals removal: actual catch actually accounts for all fish that was caught and therefore removed from the stock (retained AND discarded) Value of catch: summary presented at the WCPFC, making use of the countries ACE

CONSERVATION OF THE STOCKS Annual Catch Estimates Why ? DATA e.g. ACE CONSERVATION OF THE STOCKS ANALYSES Stock assessments SCIENTIFIC ADVICE MANAGEMENT ADVICE

CSV from Dorado Recon Report #2.2.3 Annual Catch Estimates Transfer Dorado CSV output to EXCEL template EXCEL ACE TEMPLATE CSV from Dorado Recon Report #2.2.3 http://bit.ly/ACE-TUTO

Annual Catch Estimates EXCEL template work + +

OUTPUT FROM EXCEL TEMPLATE transferred here (as per slide) OUTPUT FROM EXCEL TEMPLATE transferred here

Annual Catch Estimates Raised catches – see Dorado Reports Generated by fleet for each key WCPFC species The higher the coverage, the closer to reality

Annual Catch Estimates HOW ? Which category do you fit into ? Logsheet coverage in TUFMAN2 is very high Work through the Guidelines and DORADO Logsheet coverage in TUFMAN2 not so good … See SPC (…and work through the Guidelines) Very few data for my fleet SPC, please help me ! My domestic fisheries are complex None of the above see SPC

Annual Catch Estimates HOW ? Which category do you fit into ? Observer data exist in TUFMAN2 Work through the Guidelines and DORADO Observer data doesn’t exist in TUFMAN2 See SPC

Annual Catch Estimates USB key All needed material is included on your USB key Guidelines – Steps to produce ACE (PDF) ACE Excel templates (XLSX) WCPFC Annual Catch Estimates previous submission (as a template if you don’t have it)
