Offensive System Is Built On Ball Security Temp – “Play fast and then faster” Control the Defense Get the Ball to Playmakers in Space – Let them Create Protect the Passer – Quick Game/Screens Play the Next Play Think Players not Plays “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.” – General George S Patton

Offensive System Requirements Simpler = Play Fast Speed/Quickness Attack the Defense – Don’t Play Defense on Offense Don’t Change the Play – Change the Presentation QB Friendly – “Get the Ball Out Fast!” Hat For a Hat Let Our Athletes Create in Space Spread People Out = Open Field Tackling Don’t Play in a Box Create the Energy – Fast, Fun, Finish

Core Characteristics of Offense The Big 5 Core Characteristics of Offense Toughness Tempo Finish Big Plays Swag “Are You The Same Guy Everyday”

We Live On: Fast Tempo Efficient Communication = Hand Signals Keep It Simple Practice At The Tempo You Want WR’S – Find The Grass or Take The Grass QB Has Progressions – Train The Eyes Effective Substitution– Everyone Involved O-Line Find The Ball and Set Up Quickly – Limit Calls Give The Ball Back To Ref After Each Play Play the Next Play

“Focus – Fast – Finish” How We Play Create The Attitude! Tempo!! Practice Fast – Play Fast! Play The Next Play Fix The Problems Protect Our Players – Protect Our Plays “Focus – Fast – Finish”

12% Rule Our Winning Percentage Goes Up To 92% When We Keep These Mistakes Under 12%. Turnovers Sacks Drop Balls Foolish Penalties Example – 90 Offensive Plays – 12% of 90 is 11 Plays We must have no more than 11 plays with the above mistakes.

Champions Champions carry themselves like champions. They make championship decisions. They practice like champions and train like champions. Players must understand that it has to be a daily process. You can’t pick and choose when you want to train like a champion. You have to do it now, later, and after that.

Cadence/Snap Count The QB will always signal formation, direction, motion, and play to all skill players. It is fast paced, no huddle, tempo offense. Regular Formation, Play, “Ready – Set Hut”, (Snap Ball) Example: “Trio Rt Zorro Odd”… “Ready” “Set Hut” Express Formation, Play, “Set Hut”, (Snap Ball) Example: “Trio Rt, Trio Rt, Zorro, Zorro”… “Set Hut”

QB Drills

Warm Up Drills These Drills Will Be Done Every Day During Pre-Practice Soft Toss Knee Throws at 90 Degrees Toes On The Line Punch Stance 6 Inch Power Step

Soft Toss To get the blood flowing and to get the muscles warm we being with soft toss. During this drill we emphasize controlling the football with their grip and spinning the ball to the target. The index finger should be the last finger touching the ball when released.

Knee Throws at 90 Degrees In this drill the QB gets on one knee and focuses on feeling the ball push back to a 90 degree angle like the picture to the right. Finding the feel of the 90 degree angle is very important because from there you can release the football, which will prevent dragging the elbow. When the ball is released from 90 degrees, this will allow the QB to develop faster arm speed and improve accuracy by staying on top of the ball. “On Top Of The Ball” is an important feeling that we coach to our QBs because it’s when the throwing hand gets above the ball at the point of his release, that gives him the natural feel of being in control of the football for accuracy.

Toes On The Line The QB squares his body to his target with his toes on the line in front of him. Here we teach the player to take an athletic stance, knees bent almost like he is about to shoot a free throw. This drill helps the QB develop the proper shoulder turn toward his target. We work on rotating the shoulders back and releasing the shoulders so the throwing shoulder is now pointing toward his target after his release. “Throw with your shoulders” and “Look down your gun barrel” are two descriptions we give during this drill.

Punch Stance This is the most important drill to do during pre-practice because we are building a foundation from which to throw. The Punch Stance is just that, it’s a stance before releasing a bunch. We like our QBs to be slightly open to his target with his weight loaded on his back leg but keeping his shoulders level. The Punch Stance allows the QB to use his large muscles such as his legs, core, hips, and shoulders in his throwing motion. One word we use a lot when describing this stance is feeling compact, and in position to make any throw on the field from this stance.

6 Inch Power Step The QB assumes his punch stance 6 inches behind the line and works, making sure that when he steps toward the target, he doesn’t over stride across the line. The QB finishes his throw by coming to balance with his toes back on the line. This is a great drill to make sure he stays compact, balanced, and his step is pointing outside his target.

During Practice Drills These Drills Will Be Done Every Day During Practice Kliff Drill Houston Drill Figure 8 Drill Set Up Drill Chow Drill

Kliff Drill This drill is from Kliff Kingsberry, Head Coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Objective: To teach the QB how to move his body and feet quickly into his punch stance with proper throwing mechanics and to get the throw off toward his target as fast as possible while being compact and balance. Description: The QB needs to be 10 yards from his target and facing away from it. With a command from his coach, the QB will jog away from his target. As soon as he gets 2 to 4 strides into his jog, the QB will get a second command of either “Easy” or “Hard”. The “Easy” command requires that the QB flip around the easier way and throw the ball back towards his target, while the “Hard” command requires him to flip around the more difficult way to throw the ball back to his target. Do this drill three times with each command. Following this drill, the QB is asked to jog down and back peddle down the line and on a command like “Ball”, the QB will set his feet and quickly throw accurate passes to his target.

Houston Drill This drill was developed by Noel Mazzone when he coached at Colorado State University. Objective: The Houston Drill helps the QB develop great feet and the athletic ability to move in the pocket while always maintaining the readiness to make the throw. Description: This drill helps the quarterback develop the ability to move around pressure quickly and still be balanced and compact enough to make the throw anywhere on the field. We set up 4 agile bags in a row about a yard apart. The QB begins in a throwing position in front of the first bag. He will then sprint through the bags and set up in a throwing position on the other side, and with his eyes down field, he will work with his back foot through the bags as quickly as possible. After he gets back to where he started, he will then sprint through the bags one more time and set up at the end. When he sets up at the end of the bags he should be under control and balanced in his punch stance. Once he sets up quickly into his punch stance he will make an accurate throw to his target.

Figure 8 Drill This drill was developed by Taylor Mazzone at UCLA. Objective: The QB develops the feel of knowing where his feet are without using his eyes while keeping the punch stance as he works around obstacles. Description: The drill requires 6 cones lined up as shown in the illustration to the right. To increase the challenge, the QB will need his coach to direct him throughout the cones while keeping his eyes on the target. The QB starts from the center of the cones, working his way around the cones to make a figure 8 before coming back to his starting point at the center of the figure 8. While the QB is sliding around the cones in a throwing position and using his back foot to get around, he must remain alert for a command from the coach to make a throw to his target.

Set Up Drill Objective: This drill is to help the QB develop the ability to keep his eyes down field while being pushed out of the pocket, and having to quickly set his feet to make the throw. Description: Set two cones on either side of the QB, about 5 yards apart. The QB will take his 3- step drop and set up in the punch stance for a quick count and then sprint to the cone that the coach points to. The QB will sprint, while keeping both hands on the ball and his eyes down field, to the cone the coach pointed to. The QB will touch the cone with his non-throwing hand and then sprint to the other cone as fast as possible. The QB will be challenged to set into his punch stance at the other cone to make an accurate throw to his target downfield. Make sure the QB stays compact and balanced once he sets up at the second cone.

Chow Drill This drill was created by Norm Chow, head coach of The University of Hawaii. Objective: This drill teaches the QB how to use his back foot when sliding away from pressure in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. Description: The QB will take a 3 or 5 step drop, and once set into his punch stance, will slide 1 lateral step, leading with the back foot followed by 1 shuffle up to make a throw to his target. The QB must be balanced and compact with two hands on the ball at all times. There are two ways to run this drill, either “1 up and 1 over” or “1 over and 1 up”.
