Fertilizer Traded by District:Uganda 4.10 Fertilizer Types by District Summary: In all the districts surveyed it was clear that DAP, UREA, NPK compounds and CAN are the most traded fertilizers; however there was relatively limited trade in UREA in Kabale and in CAN in Kabale and Kisoro. Liming was limited in all the districts surveyed and was only traded in Masaka – 33% of the agro dealers surveyed in Masaka said they traded in lime. The trade in ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate is predominantly in eastern Uganda; 80% of the agro dealers in Mbale traded in both of these ammonium based products; 33% of the agro dealers surveyed in Kapchorwa traded in ammonium sulphate; and 17% of the agro dealers in Kapchorwa traded in ammonium nitrate. Trade in TSP, MOP and SSP is limited to central and western regions: 17% of the agro dealers in Kampala traded in SSP, 17% of the agrodealers surveyed in Kampala traded in TSP, and 33% of the agro dealers in Masaka traded in TSP. MOP is predominantly traded in the western region; 50% of the agro dealers in Kabale traded in MOP while 33% of the agro dealers in Masaka also traded in MOP. These trading patterns reflect the cropping patterns across districts. For instance, bananas are mainly grown in Kabale while Irish potatoes and other horticultural crops are predominantly grown in Kisoro. Maize, rice, cassava and plantation (sugarcane and tea) are mainly grown in Mbale while in Kapchorwa Irish potatoes and maize are predominantly grown on the slopes of Mt Elgon. The majority of the agro delaers surveyed did not trade in organics and foliar fertilizers – the exception was in Kampala where 17% of the agro dealers traded in these types of fertilizers
