Design for the Circular Economy BBIA London, UK Mark Vergauwen, Commercial Director EMEA June 19, 2019 March 2015

The New Plastic Economy – Circular Model THE NEW PLASTICS ECONOMY RETHINKING THE FUTURE OF PLASTICS, EMF, 2016 Need to secure that renewable resources are produced in a sustainable way.

The New Plastics Ecomomy - Circular Model Where does Ingeo fit in? 1. Ingeo can be chemically and mechanically recycled . 4. Design: Ingeo comes with new properties leading to new designs. 2. Ingeo fits in ind. composting and AD. 5. Ingeo is for 100% made from renewable resources. 3. Incineration of Ingeo produces green electricity 6. Ingeo can reduce e.g. fossil fragments in final compost. THE NEW PLASTICS ECONOMY RETHINKING THE FUTURE OF PLASTICS, EMF, 2016

Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences is exploring new paper-based materials and biodegradable/compostable polymers that are also recyclable, among other alternatives. This could become a valuable option in places where recycling infrastructure does not yet exist and will not be available for some time. 4

Biopolymers in Packaging - Trends Compostable for select formats Where a composting infrastructure is in place or emerging Closed loop Domestic collection: e.g. Italy Organic waste diversion Functional items: e.g. compostable bags, organic bin liners, veggie bags Difficult to recycle – e.g. thin films, portion packs,.. Paper based formats Should be compatible with paper recycle infrastructure Option to design for compostability Decouple plastics from fossil resources (=linear by definition) Preferential, brand owner driven Fossil carbon reduction targets Recycle opportunity to be developed Regulation/Media Emphasis on recovery/recycle Renewable aspect underrated
