Approaching the Unseen Poem

Step 1: Identify the key word in the question

Step 2: Read the poem. At the end of each stanza summarise what you have learnt in relation to the question (in this case what you have learnt about the geography teacher

Step 3: Introduction Introduction In the poem… Name the poem and the poet Summarise in a list of three adjectives what you learn about the geography teacher.

Language Structure Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs Simile, metaphor, personification, pathetic fallacy Declarative, exclamatory, imperative, interrogative Short sentences, multi-clause sentences Type of poem: narrative, ballad, lyric and then stanza style: quatrain, tetrain Rhyme – free verse, internal rhyme, rhyming couplets, Repetition Contrast - juxtaposition Step 4: Main body WHAT? What have we learnt about the geography teacher? HOW? How have we learnt this? Evidence – quotation (x3 ideal short quotations) Techniques used – both language and structure: WHY? What do we learn about the geography teacher from the evidence and the techniques? What can be inferred?
