Presentation transcript:

Types of Feedback to optimise performance feedback is information received during or after a performance about the performance It is easy to fall into the trop of thinking that feedback comes from a coach. This is only one way of receiving feedback. You'll need to be very open about how you think about the term feedback.

Types of feedback Feedback Intrinsic Extrinsic Terminal Concurrent

Key Terms Intrinsic Feelings/motivation/ feedback that comes from within (Internal) Extrinsic Feelings/motivation/ feedback that come from others (External)

Intrinsic feedback comes from within. It relates to how a movement feels, which is known as kinaesthetic feel. Inexperienced performers will not be able to rely on this feedback because they will not be able to rely on this feedback because they will not have a developed knowledge and understanding of how skills should feel. In contrast, experienced performers have developed knowledge and understanding of kinaesthetic feel and will know if a movement is correct or incorrect. They will be much more capable of self assessing and self correcting because of their extra experience.

Extrinsic feedback comes from a coach The feedback will normally come in the form of visual or verbal guidance as a coach relays what the performer did right and wrong, and shows or tells them how they looked. Less-experienced performers need this kind of feedback to let them know how they have done and motivate and encourage them to keep trying. More experienced performers are likely to use extrinsic feedback with intrinsic feedback to gain a full picture of how they did before deciding on what needs to be improved.

Intrinsic Feedback Extrinsic feedback Key Terms Information a performer receives about their performance that comes from within and is linked to how a movement feels. Extrinsic feedback Information a performer receives about their performance from a coach

Concurrent feedback happens during the performance Concurrent feedback can be intrinsic or extrinsic. If an activity last long enough, a performer can make adjustments as they go. A performer can feel that they're doing something wrong and alter it or a coach could verbally instruct them to make a change

Terminal feedback happens after the performance It can occur straight away or some time later. Terminal feedback always comes from an extrinsic feedback source. Many sports teams run full video analysis sessions with their players, which are an example of terminal feedback.

Concurrent Feedback Terminal Feedback Key Terms Concurrent Feedback Information a performer receives about their performance during the activity Terminal Feedback Information a performer receives about their performance after the activity has been completed.

Exam Questions Discuss the photos and decide, for each photo, which types of feedback would be possible? Think about the length of each activity and whether a coach could give feedback during the activity or would have to wait until after it has finished. Pause the video, and answer the above questions

Using Graphical representations of data to give feedback on performance With technology now heavily involved in sports, lots of performance-related data is collected. Many sports including cricket, basketball and American football, collect lots of data that can be used to give the performance detailed feedback on their performance. It is usually presented graphically to make it easier to interpret and analyse. Performance related data is usually delivered as extrinsic and terminal feedback, but coaches can now receive data during a game making it concurrent feedback. This data can affect the messages that are passed to performers and can also influence substitutions and tactical changes.

Examples of Graphical representations of data Pause the video, and answer the questions These are pitch maps produced by Hawkeye to show where bowlers in cricket, have pitched their deliveries Interpret the data: which blower bowled the highest percentage of short balls? Create three pie charts to show data Analyse the data: how would this kind of feedback on performance be useful to the blower?
