Gorman High School vs. Traditional High School Gorman Learning Center -Flexibility in schedule and curriculum choices -Smaller classes -Some Team Sports -Personalized -AP and Honors course options Traditional School -Minimal flexibility -Larger Team Sports -Must attend daily -AP and Honors course options Choices to attend RC, take courses online, take college courses, or work independently DO NOT SAY: -Courses do not follow the UC “a-g” eligibility requirements in and of themselves -There are ways to work towards UC eligibility

High School Graduation Credit Requirements 40 credits of English 20 credits of Math (Algebra 1 Required) 20 credits of Science (Labs not Required) 30 credits of History/Social Studies 20 credits of Physical Education 10 credits of VAPA/Foreign Language 5 credits of Health 75 credits of Electives Our Grad Reqs were recently revised to this. WE are awaiting board approval. MATH: One full year of Algebra is required to graduate. If they took it in middle school, their grades in higher level math courses will demonstrate their knowledge A full year of Geometry is also required to enter into a UC as a freshman. If these are the only two higher-level math courses listed on a student’s transcript the UC won’t likely be interested anyway. They would want to see Algebra 2 and beyond. VAPA/FL: Basic- 1 year of either VAPA or For Lang College- 1 year of VAPA 220 credits required to graduate

What your 9th grade year might look like…. FALL SEMESTER Course Credits English 9 A 5 Algebra 1 A 5 Earth Science A 5 PE 5 Elective 5 Health 5 SPRING SEMESTER Course Credits English 9 B 5 Algebra 1 B 5 Earth Science B 5 PE 5 Elective 5 This is what a typical 9th grade school year would look like. Each class earns 1 credit each LP There are 5 LPs, so they would earn 5 credits per class each semester They have to be enrolled in 6 classes per semester, except during their senior year. 5 credits per class for a Semester Course x 2 semesters = 10 credits each year per class

To be best prepared for College: (A-G Requirements) 4 yrs English 3 yrs Math -4 recommended -Algebra 1 Required -Geometry Required (A-G) 2-4 yrs Lab Science -Biology & Chemistry Required 3 yrs Social Studies 2 yrs Foreign Language -3-4 recommended 1 yrs same VAPA 1 Yr College Prep Electives 220 credits required to graduate This is the A-G track. To graduate from High School, these PLUS the regular graduation requirements are required, so PE and Health are also still required. “C” or higher on college prep courses Min overall GPA 3.5 or higher

Electives can be: Extra courses to prepare you for college and career, like foreign language, more math and science…. Career Technical Education (You can earn a certificate while in high school, for a career!) Fun classes, like Art, Dance, Theater, Volunteer, Scouts, Drivers Ed https://gormanhighschoolav.weebly.com/elective-ideas.html A Voc ED is Vocational Education which can include any courses to guide students in finding a career, including Work experience and volunteer experience. Technology courses would also be good selections for an elective. Drivers Ed is not required, but can be an option for a elective.
