Reception at Littlehaven

Our focus today Classes for September- how are they created? Preparing the children for transition. End of Year data Reports AOB

How we set up classes for September? Before half term we asked the children to name two friends. We always try to ensure that the children will be with at least one of these children. Teachers have listened to specific requests. Teachers know the children and who does and does not work well together. We will try to ensure that there is a balance of boys and girls, children who may have specific needs and abilities.

What the classes will look like in September? There will be three classes. These will be the class teachers: Each class is mixed Year 1 with Year 2 children and will have up to 30 children. Mr Shrubb – Woodpecker class Miss McMillan – Goldfinch class Mrs Messenger – Robin class

What the classes will look like in September? In September, the balance between self-initiated learning and teacher directed learning will change. The children will receive more direct teaching, ie: Literacy and Numeracy sessions daily. The children change curriculum – moving from the Early Years Foundation stage and onto the National curriculum… for the next 13+ years…….

The children will have more structured routines The children will have more structured routines. For example, they will attend assembly everyday. Many of these routines the children are already familiar with. Children will continue to have access to play-based opportunities and outside learning. In the first half term, Early Years teachers will plan with the Year 1 and 2 team to help them to plan opportunities and use approaches that build upon the children’s learning in Reception.

Transition into Year 1 Some children become anxious about the changes that are about to take place. So we plan, especially this half term to support the children…. Individual children may receive support from the Learning Mentor and/or as part of a resilience group with Miss White. The children take part in weekly Jigsaw sessions. This half term we will be discussing changes, any worries that they have about these, and what we can do in school to minimise these worries. The children will have a series of visits with their new class teachers. The children will be able to share their interests and worries and will be buddied up with an older child.

The children are starting to take part in more whole school activities such as assemblies and break times to develop relationships with other children and staff. Staff meet with your child’s teacher and will share information about them as a person, as well as their learning strengths and weakness.

How can you support your child’s transition into Year One? Please share any worries with your child’s teacher. Talk to your child about what they think will happen in Year 1 and share any concerns with staff that may have come up. Talk with your child about how many things won’t change – uniform, assembly, friends, etc, and how some things will. Fill in the information leaflet with your child so their new teacher is informed. Start looking at the Year 1 and 2 information on the website. Continue to talk about their day, worries into the first few weeks of Year One and share any issues with your child’s teacher. Come along to the Stay and Learn sessions in the Autumn term.

End of Year data By the end of June the Early Years team must submit their data as to which children have met Good level of Development or have exceeded in all areas of PSED, PD, CL, LIT and Maths. 1 – indicates that they have yet to make GLD 2 – indicates that they have met GLD 3 – indicates that they are exceeding

Areas of difficulty in meeting GLD and how to help LITERACY: Please practice the key words and their Big cat books regularly. They must be able to decode words and read simple sentences. Encourage them to write AND read back sentences they have written. MATHS: Make sure that they are counting reliably. Can they use appropriate language to describe size, weight, capacity, position, distance and time?

Reports In July you will receive your child’s end of year report. If you want to discuss it please let your child’s teacher know. It’s very similar to previous documents, but will identify if your child has met GLD and identify their targets to work on as they move into Year One.

AOB Dates: Summer Fair – 15th June 12 – 2pm Final “Stay and Play” will be Wednesday 17th July Any questions?
