REFRAMING THE VALUE OF TEACHING NW-PULSE @ NW Bio 2018 REFRAMING THE VALUE OF TEACHING Boise State University Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) Amy Ulappa, Juliette Tinker, Jennifer Forbey VISION – Create an engaging curriculum aligned with the AAAS Vision and Change core content and competencies recommendations. MAIN GOAL to attain our vision– Quantify innovative teaching and increase the value of teaching Photos should be at least 300dpi, but not more than 5-12 mgs each. Your poster is set to be enlarged 200% so do not change the page size to fit another poster size. Posters (3’ x 4’) will be printed at WWU using the same purchase order at the same time. Please email your poster as a PPT file to by Joann Otto at WWU by Friday, April 13, 2018, by 5 pm. Please contact Joann Otto (Joann.Otto@wwu.edu) with questions about poster printing. Also please put your institution “logo” on your poster. Please note that this template is provided to simplify your effort to prepare a poster for the NW Biology meeting. You can change the font size, colors, column widths, add photos, institutional logos, graphics, etc. This template can also be used as a starting point and you can be as creative as you want in your poster. However, we would like to have all of the posters the same size and we will be printed at the same time, at the same print shop in order to easily pay for printing with one purchase order. Strengths, Leverage & Allies AAAS Vision & Change 2011 recommendations BSU Center for Teaching & Learning NW PULSE resources NSF WIDER PERSIST grant # DBS 2017 (5yr) NSF S-STEM grant $ BSU College of Arts and Sciences Dean COPUS in-class assessments and student surveys 1,2 Assessed faculty values (values card sort) 3 ACTIONS Revised DBS program level learning outcomes (Figure 3) & created curriculum map. Revised Tenure and Promotion Guidelines to include the Boyer Model 4 and increase teaching value. Vision & Main Goal Curriculum aligned with AAAS Vision & Change with integrated student experiences. Teaching innovation valued for Tenure and Promotion Figure 1: Links between resources, actions and BSU DBS achievements. Figure 3: Program level learning outcomes changed from 10 to 5 in spring 2018, assessment completed in April 2018. UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES? PRODUCTS & SUSTAINABILITY - Concrete program level learning outcomes (Fig. 3) and T & P policy changes - Continued assessment of the DBS “sense of community & learning” via NSF S-STEM grant Time is always a barrier so leveraging our institution’s focus on program level learning outcomes and T & P revisions deadlines worked well to move this discussion forward. We have identified areas that are strong in our curriculum and can now make plans to improve based on our assessment. FUTURE GOALS - Revise curriculum based on assessment of DBS program level learning outcomes and create annual DBS Teaching Award Figure 2: DBS faculty at a retreat discussing curriculum structure, learning outcomes & aligning with AAAS Vision and Change recommendations. $ NSF DUE #1644233 Gateway Scholarships in Biological Sciences, #  NSF DUE#1347830 WIDER PERSIST, BSU Center for Teaching and Learning This work was supported NSF RCN UBE award # 1345033.
