WHAT IS FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE??????

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Figurative Language utilizes various figures of speech and literary devices such as metaphors, similes, and more, in order to enhance the reader's understanding of a particular matter, event, character, etc. Within their piece of writing.

EXAMPLES???

METAPHOR When a word or words are applied to an object or thing to which it is not literally applicable, usually representing or symbolizing something else, something greater, or something more abstract.

SIMILIE Similar to a metaphor, similes compare two things in a figurative manner, though specifically using the words like or as

PERSONIFICATION  Lending human-like traits to typically non-human entities, objects, or things.  Animals are a very commonly seen example of personification in many stories, particularly children's tales and cartoons.

HYPERBOLE  Really simple- a hyperbole is an exaggeration. Authors will use hyperboles to further express themselves and help to get their point across to their readers

EXAMPLES?? And no, your Mom exaggerating about how much time you spend looking at your phone does not count...

ALLITERATION  The repetition of a particular letter or sound amongst words that are closely connected in sequence

EXAMPLES??

IDIOM

IDIOM An Idiom is an expression or figure of speech, not meant to be taken literally, that has become an understood saying or expression over a period of time.

ONOMATOPOEIA Easily one of the more fun examples of figurative language is the onomatopoeia- the use of "sound effect" words to further aid the author's purpose.

SYNESTHESIA Also a term for a psychological phenomenon, Synesthesia is when the author uses imagery that combines multiple senses' perceptions in order to create a blended experience or feeling he or she intends to evoke from the reader.
