Israel A Jewish state on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, both in ancient history and again founded in 1948 after centuries of Jewish diaspora.

Palestine A territory in the Middle East on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Disputed with Israel.

Migration movement of people from one place to another; intention of living or temporarily staying there

Diaspora A Greek word meaning 'dispersal,' used to describe the communities of a given ethnic group living outside their homeland. Jews, for example, spread from Israel to western Asia and Mediterranean lands in antiquity and today can be found in other places.

Holocaust A mass slaughter of Jews and other civilians, carried out by the Nazi government of Germany before and during World War II.

Nazi The doctrines of nationalism, racial purity, anti-Communism, and the all-powerful role of the State. The National Socialist German Workers Party, otherwise known as the Nazi Party. Nazism was advocated by Adolf Hitler in Germany.

United Nations An international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues.

West Bank An area between Israel and Jordan on the west bank of the Jordan river.

Gaza Strip A territory along the Mediterranean Sea just northeast of the Sinai Peninsula; part of the land set aside for Palestinians, which was occupied by Israel in 1967.

Golan Heights A region that was formerly part of Southwest Syria that Israel has occupied since 1967 war.
