Education Act 1989 Schedule 6, Part 2 4 (2) A board is responsible for the governance of the school, including setting the policies by which the school is to be controlled and managed. 5 (1) A board’s primary objective in governing the school is to ensure that every student at the school is able to attain his or her highest possible standard in educational achievement. Since 2013 nicely summed up in Sec 75. Now need to look to Sixth Schedule of amended where for the first time we see “governance” used in relation to board’s role. NZSTA Programme 2015

Private Schools Conditional Integration Act 1975 An integration agreement: - establishing partnership between the Crown and the proprietor - defines special character that shapes the curriculum, enrolments, staffing processes and culture Not directly relevant to this session but: These relate to the Minister’s ability to require proprietors to provide financial and other information, take factors important to the Crown into consideration in their decision making (e.g. state-integrated school viability in an area with a declining population) and a revised processes for the merger of state-integrated schools that means schools will no longer need to close before opening a new school. Amendments to the Education Act 1989 Private Schools Conditional Integration Act incorporated into Education Act effective from 19 May 2017 MOE developing guidance for proprietors around three new provisions Not directly relevant to this session but: These relate to the Minister’s ability to require proprietors to provide financial and other information, take factors important to the Crown into consideration in their decision making (e.g. state-integrated school viability in an area with a declining population) and a revised processes for the merger of state-integrated schools that means schools will no longer need to close before opening a new school. Ministry of Education (Crown) Board of Trustees Integration Agreement Proprietor Aims and objectives of all parties need to be aligned. The Board of Trustees need to take the requirements of the Crown/MOE into account as well as the requirements of the proprietor to protect and enhance the special character of the school. P6 lists other stakeholders. Focus on relationship with Proprietor. Discuss different reasons/circumstances for communication/interaction. When might/does this occur, how does it occur and who is responsible for initating/organizing it. Share NZSTA Programme 2015

National Education Goals replaced with: Enduring Objectives – from 19 May 2017 National Education & Learning Priorities (NELP) - 5 year Government priorities - developed following consultation Education Act Section 1A
