San Juan Elementary School Outdoor Science School 2019-2021 September 5, 2018
Outdoor Science School History Before 2008, the school received grants from the US Department of Education and California Edison that covered the cost of Outdoor Science School for all students in 5th grade. The 5th grade historically has attended outdoor science school in Big Bear, California. When the economy turned down in 2008, the school lost the US Department of Education and Edison grants. Funding for Outdoor Science School became the responsibility of the parents to either pay or fundraise for the grade to go. To keep costs down, Outdoor Science School was moved from Big Bear to Irvine Ranch, the duration of the camp was reduced from 5 days to 4, and the timing of the camp was changed from Spring to Fall. Last year 5th grade went back to Big Bear because part of Irvine Ranch burned. The school paid the differential between Irvine Ranch and Big Bear. September 5, 2018

We must start now to donate and fundraise. How Can We Raise Funds? Parent Donations – we need to increase the parent contributions Historically the parents have contributed roughly $12,000 Approximately 25% of families donate the full amount, 65% donate $0 Grants Corporate Donations/Sponsorships – company matching programs School fundraising It requires many fundraisers to raise sufficient funds for OSS. Parents have fundraising fatigue but without increased family donations, other OSS options need to be considered. Fundraising strategy was changed last year so that most school-wide fundraisers now benefit the grade who raised the funds. We must start now to donate and fundraise. It takes all of the items listed above to make this a success! September 5, 2018
Parental Support? Every grade needs to decide whether there is a majority of parents who support OSS and the necessary payments/fundraising that accompanies it. If there is parental support, it would be helpful to understand how each family can contribute - financial and/or volunteer commitment. June 1 is the date each year when the deposit needs to be made for the following year OSS camp. Based on the funds raised by that date, a decision will be made for what the grade can afford. It takes more than 2-3 parents to send the grade to OSS. All parents must get involved to provide volunteer and/or financial support. September 5, 2018
