Population Demographics of Canada Why do people settle in certain places?

Settlement Patterns Population Distribution-areas in which people have settled in a particular country. Archipelago effect—the idea that Canada’s population distribution looks like a grouping of islands Using the 2 maps on page 40-41, identify 3 patterns of population distribution in Canada.

North America at Night

Population Density Population density—a measurement that reveals how closely people live together in a particular country. –Population density, when used inappropriately, can be deceiving –Canada 35 000 000 (approx pop)/ 9 093 510 (land area)= 3.84 people/ sqkm –Netherlands 17 000 000 /41 526= 409.38 people/ sqkm

Settlement Patterns Tied to our history. Aboriginals were situated prior to European contact. Mi’kmaq- along rivers and plenty of land resources Inuit- lived in North along coastlines; used ocean resources Simply put, European settlers took the good land, and forced Aboriginals to relocate to poor land.

Decline and Growth of Settlements Cause and Effect Site and Situational factors lead to the growth of Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton Look at the images on page 47 (a,b,c) Outline the Causes and Effects that have shaped the port city of Halifax. - 1700’s- good for early military, great harbour, lots of trees - 1894- decline of markets in Halifax; cheaper in other places - 1900’s- World Wars- gateway for supplies and troops; leads to new development

Decline and Growth of Settlements Rural settlements- outside of cities (often farms) Urban settlements- city centers Why would people move to a city? Why would people move from a city? Urbanization- the movement from Rural to Urban areas causing city growth. What are potential effects of growing cities in the city? From old rural areas?

Your Community… Push and Pull Factors What factors are in place to allow Moncton to grow in the Atlantic Region? What factors are in place that push people to move away from Moncton?
