What is Project GO? DoD Program for University-based ROTC language and culture training DoD Project GO Objectives Program mission goal 1: Commission 2nd LTs with 4 semesters of language training Program mission goal 2: In that time, produce 2nd LTs with ILR/DLPT score of 1+ (or better) Strategy Fully fund accelerated summer study Prioritize cadets who commit to 4+ semesters of a single language What that means, concretely Standards for Project GO are higher than for others: Maintain a B average or better in Session A in order to progress to Session B (or advanced with ROTC & program director recommendation) It’s a high bar, but we want you to succeed Drill partners/tutors are provided for everyone Maintain the language pledge, no matter how hard it gets (single best thing you can do)

Grade Requirements You need a B or better to progress from Session A to Session B If you run into trouble, contact instructors and Project GO Coordinator immediately We want you to succeed, and in accelerated program, there is no time to wait for things to improve. If you slip, let’s get back on track right away. Help is available Regular Tutors Open office hours Special office hours / special tutoring (arranged by GO coordinator)

About those 4 semesters IU team will sit down with each of you over the summer to create a plan

The Language Pledge All Arabic/Chinese/Russian, All the Time ‘Time on Task’ is the single most important determinant of who succeeds at a language and who does not. The Language Pledge maximizes your time on task. It teaches one the most valuable communicative skill of all: circumlocution (finding ways to get around holes in your language ability) In the dorm, on the street, in the gym, at events, at parties: wherever there is someone you can speak the language to, do it The Thing No One Talks About… It’s really hard to do. It will be frustrating. This is guaranteed. You will lose your ability to express yourself. You won’t be able to be subtle. You won’t be able to tell jokes. You won’t really be able to be polite at first. You won’t be able to explain yourself. It can feel very isolating, especially in the first 2 weeks. Even so, it is still the single best thing you can do to improve your language skills How to prepare: You have a week to get to know your fellow students in English. Make an effort to get to know each other now, so that you understand each other better in the critical first two weeks when your vocabulary is still limited. Don’t lose sight of your progress. You will be making incredible progress, but it’s easy not to notice that. No matter how hard things are today, they were probably harder yesterday. Don’t give up, and don’t let your friends give up.

PT & Uniforms There is no required PT! Uniforms are not required at any point by IU Project GO All students have access to SRSC

Programming Anything mandated by instructors Mandatory Project GO activities Classroom absences are not allowed Contact us in writing or in case of emergency – call Reasons that will be evaluated on case by case: family, medical, military

Language Testing All students take OPI at end of Workshop Some students may have other testing All Project GO assessments are required by contract

Traveling Off-campus and out-of-town travel is allowed! Notify Coordinator if you travel outside of Bloomington

Deportment As IU students, subject to IU Code of Conduct Alcohol Those over age 21 in Willkie can have alcohol in dorm rooms, not in common areas Do not give alcohol to underage students Indiana ‘Lifeline Law’ No weapons are allowed on campus Sexual harassment issues
