On First Looking into Chapman's Homer By: John Keats Chantia Creekmore 2B 03/19/14

The Poem .. Written by John Keats Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold, And many goodly states and kingdoms seen; Round many western islands have I been Which bards in fealty to Apollo hold. Oft of one wide expanse had I been told That deep-brow'd Homer ruled as his demesne; Yet did I never breathe its pure serene Till I heard Chapman speak out loud and bold: Then felt I like some watcher of the skies When a new planet swims into his ken; Or like stout Cortez when with eagle eyes He star'd at the Pacific—and all his men Look'd at each other with a wild surmise— Silent, upon a peak in Darien.

About the author . John Keats died at the age of 25. He had the most remarkable career of any English poet. He published only 54 poems, in three slim volumes and a few magazines. John was born in London on 31 October 1795, the eldest of Thomas and Frances Jennings Keats's four children.

About the poem .. The poem was written by an English poet, John Keats in October 1816. It tells of the author's astonishment while reading the works of the ancient Greek poet Homer as freely translated by the Elizabethan playwright George Chapman.

theme and more .. The theme of this poem is when you discover new things in life, and you feel astonished and really amazed by it then it feels good to you. John Keats feels that he's read widely but the classics of Homer were beyond his understanding till he read Chapman's translation of Greek classics. My interpretation of this poem is that it is was very confusing but as I read more about it I start to understand and
