Day 4 – TC520 Technical Communication Systems: Understanding and Improving the Role of Information & Communication Systems (ICS) in Humanitarian Relief Systems (HRS) Professor Mark Haselkorn 14E Loew Hall 543-2577 markh@u.washington.edu http://faculty.washington.edu/markh/TC520/tc520.html Office Hours: Tues/Thurs 10–11 AM and by appointment TC 520 Class Notes 1/25—Haselkorn Winter 2005

Overview for Today Clarify conclusions from IPHR research and how we are going to use them; plan report; clarify organization and use of BB Presentation/discussion of candidate theses and major conclusions Presentation/discussion by Margaret Reynolds South Asia Relief News Timeline— “testing our conclusions” Presentations on content management strategy for Bulletin Board material Discussion of report project—organization & process TC 520 Class Notes 1/25—Haselkorn Winter 2005

Questions What are the tentative conclusions from previous IPHR research that we are building on? How will we use the Tsunami situation to “test” and discuss them? How will we organize this discussion for the report (preferably into three main categories)? How will we use the BB to support this effort? What else do we have to do this week to “launch” the report project? TC 520 Class Notes 1/25—Haselkorn Winter 2005

Homework Activity: Thesis and Major Conclusions Date: 01/19/2005, 9:48 AM Author: Mark Haselkorn Subject: Clarification of the Assignment for Week Four The assignment we discussed last night, due on January 25th, is to: (1) review information on the BB and IPHR website, (2) consider all that has been presented and discussed in class thus far, plus the Davneport reading, and (3) present (with handouts) a candidate general thesis statement for our report plus a series (3 - 5?) of major conclusions that support the thesis. Optional: consider how your thesis and major conclusions impact our effort to manage the BB content. Let me know if you have any questions. TC 520 Class Notes 1/25—Haselkorn Winter 2005
