Christin Stewart, RTI International Measuring anticipated sex-work stigma: Scale validation and association with HIV and non-HIV service utilization Christin Stewart, RTI International castewart@rti.org Share your thoughts on this presentation with #IAS2019

Methods 23 anticipated sex-work stigma items (types and sources) Cross-sectional survey of 729 sex workers from four study sites (Nairobi, Kitui, Homa Bay, and Busia) in Kenya Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) used to identify the best scale Logisitic regression used to assess associations between anticipated stigma and utilization of health services in the past 12 months

Results 5-factor, 18-item anticipated sex-work stigma scale Good construct validity Root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA]=0.09; standardized root mean square residual [SRMR]=0.05; and comparative fit index [CFI]=0.90 Good internal consistency Cronbach’s alpha=0.93 Higher scores on all subscales were associated with avoidance or delay of non-HIV health services. No association between anticipated stigma subscores and avoidance or delay of HIV services.

Mean Sex-Work Stigma Subscores By Avoidance or Delay of Non-HIV Health Services in the Last Year, n=729 Subscore
