Figure 1 Notch Regulates Cell Fate in Mammary Epithelium (A) Stem cells give rise to stem cells and multipotent progenitors, which then develop along either the luminal or myoepithelial (basal) lineage. Notch signals appear to be involved in signaling within and between the different cell types. (B) Reduction of Notch signals in stem cells promotes generation of stem cells and preferential differentiation toward the myoepithelial cell fate. (C) Directing constitutive Notch activation to stem cells or progenitor cells results in increased stem cell activity and transformation of cells in the luminal lineage.
