4/5/13 Chapter 22, Eisenhower/Life During the Early Cold War Aim: How did President Eisenhower’s policies help prevent war? Objective: Students will identify Eisenhower’s major policies used to prevent war during the mid to late 1950’s. Standard: RH2, RH4, WHST4 Do Now: Define the new vocabulary term Sputnik (p.784) and answer Analyzing Visuals, Primary Source #1&2, p.780. Work Period: Sputnik, video “Inventions of War” and graphic organizer. Close: From watching the video, how do you think the U.S. felt about the Soviets winning the “Space Race”?

EISENHOWER’S ATTEMPTS AT PREVENTING WAR WITH THE SOVIETS (RUSSIA)… MASSIVE RETALIATION (P.782-783) Prevented war by… increasing the nuclear arsenal and using it as a threat of future violence. This was basically a trick used to prevent war. BRINKMANSHIP (P.783) Prevented war by… again threatening to go to nuclear war so that the other side would back down. COVERT OPERATIONS, CIA (P.785) Prevented war by… providing new and weaker nations with financial aid so that communist countries couldn’t influence them to turn them into communist. SPY PLANE (P.787) Prevented war by… the Soviets shot down a spy plane right before the U.S. and Russia were abut to attend a peace summit (meeting)and Eisenhower tried to cover it up and say that it was an accident to avoid war. Krushchev got very angry and broke up the peace summit.
