They can: Uniquely identify the mailpiece owner/sender. Uniquely identify the mailpiece or mail aggregate to facilitate tracking. Allow for the encoding of single or multiple product or service requests in the case of a mailpiece – or - include unique indicators for processing mail aggregates; and Provide sortation and/or routing information There is an Intelligent Mail barcode for letters and flats; one for packages; an Intelligent Mail barcode for trays, sacks and tubs; and one for containers and pallets. You also see a 2-dimensional Information Based Indicia for the Meter and PC Postage Mailers. With these Intelligent Mail Barcodes the Postal Service will be able to capture information about these items as they flow through the system – giving true visibility into the mail.
