Focused Study Sessions Mindset and Metacognitive Learning Strategies – Dr. Layne Morsch, UIS Bloom’s Taxonomy Effective Metacognitive Strategies Learn mode, not study mode Learning/Study Sessions Study as if you will have to teach Avoid common illusions of knowing Create your own review sheet  Create Practice exams Visit the Learning Hub and/or office hours on a regular basis Active Reading Step one - Preview Step two - Come up with questions the reading can answer Step three - paraphrasing (one paragraph at a time) - when you paraphrase 2nd paragraph, include information from both Create tools - notes, flashcards, outlines, concept mapset a goal - what do you want to accomplish in your study session - 1-2 minutes Focused Study Sessions 1.  Set a goal - what do you want to accomplish in your study session – 1-2 minutes 2.  Study with focus - (hide phone, turn TV off) organize, map, summarize, process, solve, etc. ~30 minutes 3.  Reward yourself - take a break, get a snack, check your phone, etc – 5 minutes 4.  Review - go over what you just learned
