What is Organizational Behavior? Why do we need to know that? How will this help me in my career?

Organizational Behavior A multidisciplinary field engaged in studying individuals, groups and organizational processes in order to understand human behavior within an organization Organizational behavior can help managers identify problems, determine how to correct them, and establish whether the changes would make a difference. Such knowledge can help people better understand situations they face in the workplace and change their behavior so that their performance and the organization’s effectiveness increase Overall aim is to increase managerial and organizational effectiveness

Why Pay Attention to that? What predicts organizational success? How do we make people work? Human beings as the most unpredictable factor of production… Career derailment Cost of employees – the most expensive factor of production Retention of performers

Some findings… Satisfaction leads to less employee turnover Perceived unfair treatment – leads to greater stealing and other negative behaviors at work Employees experiencing mistreatment are likely to fall sick Better employee perceptions lead to more profitability and productivity

How can we study human behavior? Research Methods: Experiments Surveys Field Studies Case Study Can we really understand and predict human behavior?

OB – Historical Approach Scientific Management and Discipline – an engineering approach to managing people Bureaucracy – the efficiency argument in managing people Human Relations and Hawthorne Experiments – need for people to be motivated and satisfied Contingency – an interaction of the personal and situational factors produces the equation for most effective management

Course Objectives Understand human behavior in organizations through an analysis of theories and real life cases; Develop and appreciation for differences in human motives, attitudes and behaviors in different parts of the world; Develop tools to manage employees in a global workplace, Develop deeper insights into individual skills and behaviors in order to manage one’s own career.

Course Methodology Case teaching Case discussions Inductive method of theorization

Grading Items Case Quizzes – 100 points. Conducted at the beginning of each class. Based on the facts of the case. Will drop lowest score Case Discussions – Led by teams. Teams will generate a class discussion. Think of ways of engaging the class! Not a traditional presentation. Identify important issues in case and provide recommendations. Group Project.
