INTRO TO ELECTRONICS PART 2

Purpose Of Lesson Part 2 Understand what an electrical circuit is and how it works. Learn the difference between AC & DC current flows. Understand the differences in Amps, Volts, Ohms, & Watts.

VOCABULARY FOR THIS LESSON DIRECT CURRENT (DC) ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) WHAT IS A CIRCUIT? GROUND OR EARTH CIRCUIT? WHAT DOES VOLTAGE MEAN? WHAT ARE AMPS? WHAT ARE OHMS? WHAT ARE WATTS?

Electrical Circuit Electricity must make a circuit, a circle, a loop, even if that’s through the Earths crust and/or frame of vehicle.

Ground Circuit Here is a frame/Earth ground circuit. Below 8 foot ground rod driven into Earth.

Automotive Ground Circuit Automotive Ground – uses the body of the car.

Electrical Circuit WITH BODY! If your body gets into the circuit you could be shocked and possible killed!

ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) VS. DIRECT CURRENT (DC) AC power pushes electrons forward & pulls them back. In DC power the electrons flow in one direction. No, not the rock band AC/DC – We’re talking about the types of power.

AC GRAPHED AMPLITUDE = Basically Max Voltage + and/or -.

IN DC CURRENT Actually the electrons flow in one direction. However, discussed as though they flow the other way!

VOLTAGE Voltage Analogy = think about water PRESSURE. Voltage is the electrical PRESSURE!

AMPERAGE Analogy = water FLOW AMPS is the volume of electrical FLOW!

OHMS RESTRICTION ANALOGY = water RESTRICTION OHMS is the electrical RESTRICTION to electrical flow! More restriction the more pressure is needed to flow!

WATTS = “MADE UP TERM” Sort of Made Up! Volts times Amps = Watts (TOTAL POWER) Electricians, electronics techs, engineers, etc. really don’t think much about Watts. Designed to make things simpler for “consumers” to understand.

WATTS NOT THAT USEFUL! 100 Watt Motor: So, is that 100Volts x 1 Amp? Or 1 Volt x 100 Amps? Or 10 Amps x 10 Volts? Or 12 Volts x 8.3 Amps? Or 16 Volts x 6.25 Amps? And etc… You need to know the VOLTAGE rating, & AMPERAGE, and Resistance/load OHMS of the component.

VOCABULARY FOR THIS LESSON DIRECT CURRENT (DC) ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) WHAT IS A CIRCUIT? GROUND OR EARTH CIRCUIT? WHAT DOES VOLTAGE MEAN? WHAT ARE AMPS? WHAT ARE OHMS? WHAT ARE WATTS?
