WID Picatinny Chapter Scholarship 2018-2019 Program

Public Service Award This year, the Women in Defense (WID) Picatinny Chapter will honor one of our chapter members that has made a significant contribution(s) as a career public servant and meaningful impacts within the community. The WID Picatinny Chapter Public Service Award is awarded to an individual that has demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and integrity and best epitomized the qualities and core values of the WID Picatinny Chapter. The awardee will receive free registration including travel expenses to the annual WID National Conference held in June of each calendar year.

Eligibility Criteria Public Service Award: A member of the Picatinny Chapter in good standing. Demonstrated community service for the past 12 months (CY2018) Increases awareness of the WID mission and has created a positive change in the organization and/or community.

Public Service Award Categories 1. Name or organization Organization where the candidate performed the public service. 2. Organization’s purpose Purpose of the organization for which the public service award is being considered. 3. Nominee’s Activities and Accomplishments Was nominee instrumental in initiating or leading charitable efforts for this organization? Has the candidate taken a leading role in solving problems? Did the candidate identify a problem and devise a way to solve it? If so, describe briefly here. 4. Time commitment Average number of hours, number of years involved. 5. Innovation Has the candidate done something truly different or outstanding? Is the program or activity that the candidate is involved with unique in any way? 6. Nominee’s Overall Impact on Community How has the candidate’s work improved his or her community, including the number of people who benefited from the candidate’s activities? What have been the tangible benefits and the importance of those activities to the community’s overall wellbeing? Also weigh whether it has had impact at the national, regional or local level.

Available Awards Public Service Award (hyperlink for website) Application deadline: May 22, 2019 Amount: Based on travel expenses Candidates for the WID Picatinny Chapter Public Service Award should have demonstrated outstanding commitment and service to the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion through their work in government while demonstrating the WID Picatinny Chapter mission, goals and values. The nomination packages shall meet the following selection criteria. No exceptions will be considered. Candidates must: 1.Be a member of the Women In Defense Picatinny Chapter in good standing. 2.Increased the public's understanding of the WID Picatinny Chapter mission through community outreach, discovery, innovation, and their communication to the public.

Application Process IMPORTANT DATES: May 10 – Public Service Award Announcement Opens May 22 – Recipient Notified May 29 – Award Presented ** The number and amount of awards vary yearly based on fund availability. A separate application is required for each scholarship.

Scholarship Program Overview Each year, the Women in Defense (WID) Picatinny Chapter provides educational grant funding (need-based scholarship) to family members of the Picatinny Arsenal community who wish to pursue higher education in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Scholarship opportunities: the WID and Bob Deeds Scholarships. These scholarships were created to support high-achieving high school seniors who are in financial need and seek to attend an undergraduate school from a national accredited college or university.

Eligibility Criteria Scholarships: Students are a U.S. citizen who will graduate in 2019 from an eligible high school. You have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale). You have a minimum test score of 22/ACT or 1110/SAT (Math + Verbal). Demonstrated commitment to community service Proof of a financial need

Scholarship Categories RESUME Job experience, community work, extracurricular activities including award while in school PERSONAL ESSAY Narrative statement describing personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution, or experience. How has this experience changed or is related to the person you are? (Limit to 1000 words). LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Three letters from school official describing your academic achievement; current/former employer/mentor describing your work ethic; and a community leader describing your volunteer/charity/outreach activities. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE An offer letter or offer of admission, is a mandatory document required for the scholarship application. EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION LETTER OF INTENT (LOI) A letter that confirms the student's intention to get enrolled in a particular educational institution and provides details of their educational qualifications and career. ACADEMIC MERIT Merit scholarships look for students with academic achievement, leadership qualities, and potential to contribute to the scholarly community FINANCIAL NEED Financial need scholarships are based on the student and family's financial record. The family may fill out a: Free Application for Federal Student Aid - FAFSA Individual financial assessment COMMUNITY SERVICE/VOLUNTEER WORK Anything you do for others - at an organization such as: School, church Youth organization or Non-profit facility Helping a neighbor or relative who is a senior or disabled

Application Process IMPORTANT DATES: May 13 – Scholarship Announcement Opens June 7 - Application Deadline June 28 - Recipients Notified July 11 – Scholarships Presented ** The number and amount of awards vary yearly based on fund availability. A separate application is required for each scholarship.

Selection A panel of reviewers (WID PICA Board Assignees) will read and rate the materials and determine the top candidate(s). All candidates and nominators will be informed of the outcome by email no later than 28 June 2019.

Scholarship Committee Scholarship Chair Coordinate the application, delivery and selection process for the scholarship Review the application forms to ensure accurate representation of the rules and requirements for applicants Select scholarship recipient(s) Make arrangements for the scholarship recipient(s) to attend the Picatinny Community Day event or annual golf outing Distribute the award letter(s) to the recipients’ Follow up with scholarship recipient(s) to make sure scholarship was received The Scholarship Committee is charged with overseeing the annual scholarship and to ensure the timely and fair disposition of scholarship funds.  Committee Review all applications and score them according to the directions of the scholarship committee chair. Forward all scores to the chair by the requested deadline. Discuss applications and associated scoring via conference call or electronically and make final scholarship decisions based on a set criteria. Read eligibility requirements CAREFULLY and THOROUGHLY Proofread your scores and recommendations for spelling and grammar mistakes

Scholarship Presentation Scholarship recipients will be asked to attend the Picatinny Arsenal Community Day event and reception may be held at the Annual Golf Outing in October. Transportation to and from the events will be not be provided for the recipient. The golf outing lunch fee will be covered. No advance public announcement or publicity (such as articles in the local newspaper or the Picatinny Arsenal Voice newsletter) will be made prior to the community day. If agreed upon, the recipient will be honored on the WID Picatinny Chapter website and social media platforms.

Available Scholarships Women in Defense (hyperlink for website) Application Deadline: June 5, 2019 Amount: $1,000 The Women in Defense Scholarship has been designed to help a high school student in the pursuit of a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) college degree. Grant(s) will be available to a graduating high school senior who plans to enroll fulltime at a two-year or four-year accredited institution during the upcoming academic year. Bob Deeds (hyperlink for website) Application deadline: June 5, 2019 The Bob Deeds Scholarship is in memory of the late Bob Deeds, a former Picatinny Arsenal employee who proudly served with the US Marine Corp at Cherry Pt. NC until 1954. During his time at Picatinny Bob was an electronic technician who primarily worked in the testing area, better known as the 600 Hill, working with principle rounds and classified testing. After 38 years of service dedication to our nation Bob, learned to play golf and started to learn about crafting custom golf clubs. He donated clubs to the WID Picatinny Chapter for their scholarship golf outings.

Seek out opportunities such as: Internships Volunteer work Maintain or improve grades Student clubs or organizations Extracurricular activities and a high GPA are extremely valuable when completing a scholarship application Getting involved in the community and student organizations also enables you to learn new skills and knowledge that expand your perspective  

Writing A Winning Essay Use an outline to organize thoughts Answer the essay question(s) Give examples and be specific Personalize the essay and be passionate Write about something of interest to you Talk about your impact on other people Use clear, concise and simple language throughout the essay Proofread a printed copy of the essay for spelling and grammar errors Make sure the grammar and spelling are impeccable Explain areas of emphasis you are pursuing in college and why Tailor the essay to the specifics of each scholarship Let the readers know what makes you a good investment Include information about your accomplishments, goals, and struggles or obstacles you have overcome Don’t be general – use details and examples to stand out to your reader
