Vocabulary 19

Atom DEFINITION SENTENCE An atom is the basic building block of matter. Video- What is an Atom? (6:30) Bondbreaker Game THIS IS A LITHIUM ATOM An atom is so small, it cannot be divided or cut into smaller parts. THIS IS A GOLD ATOM DEFINITION SENTENCE

Element DEFINITION SENTENCE An element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance. It contains only ONE kind of atom. There are118 elements in the Periodic Table. Everything in the universe contains the atoms of at least one or more elements. DEFINITION SENTENCE

Sub-Atomic Particle DEFINITION SENTENCE Sub-Atomic particles are found inside every atom. They are called protons, neutrons, and electrons. Elements are defined by the number of protons inside the atom. Ex: Lithium’s atomic# is 3 Gold’s atomic# is 79 View this chart & click on an element Sub-Atomic particles have different charges. Protons are positive, electrons are negative, and neutrons are neutral (no charge). DEFINITION SENTENCE

Molecule DEFINITION SENTENCE A molecule is a particle made up of two or more atoms that are chemically bonded together. They can be atoms of the same element or atoms of different elements. **In it’s pure form and with lots of heat and pressure, carbon atoms form diamonds! Video-How Diamonds are Made (1:30) When atoms join together, they make molecules. How Molecules are Formed (1:45) DEFINITION SENTENCE

Compound Molecule DEFINITION SENTENCE A compound molecule is a molecule made of two or more DIFFERENT kinds of atoms (elements). Carbon dioxide is a compound molecule that has 1 carbon atom bonded with 2 oxygen atoms. Two different elements joined together! DEFINITION SENTENCE

Volume DEFINITION SENTENCE Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. Video-Mass, Volume & Density (2:00) The volume of a swimming pool is greater than a Jacuzzi. DEFINITION SENTENCE

*It has nothing to do with weight…think what is INSIDE! Mass Mass is how much matter is inside an object. Video-Bill Nye Atoms (23:00) The mass of a bowling ball is much greater than the mass of a basketball. *It has nothing to do with weight…think what is INSIDE! DEFINITION SENTENCE
