HOW TO CALCULATE A NURSING GPA NURSING STUDENTS MUST LEARN TO CALCULATE THEIR NURSING GPA Created by Academic Advising Services of Northwestern State University of Louisiana edited July 2019
Gpa REQUIREMENTS (BSN) Please refer to your University Catalog for a comprehensive list of requirements for admission, progression, dismissal, and graduation One very important admission requirement involves grade point average (GPA). Note that a minimum GPA of 2.7 is required in all courses for the degree. Students must also earn a minimum grade of “C” in all required biology, chemistry, mathematics, and nursing courses. Sally Mae hopes to formally apply to the BSN program within the next semester or two. The next slide shows Sally Mae’s fall and spring grades.
SALLY MAE’S Fall AND SPRING Semester Course Credits Grade Quality Points BIOL 2250 3 C 6 BIOL 2251 1 B COMM 1010 9 ENGL 1010 A 12 FA 1040 MATH 1020 UNIV 1000 4 Total Credits = ___ Total QP = ____ Course Credits Grade Quality Points ALHE 1020 2 A 8 BIOL 2260 3 12 BIOL 2261 1 B CHEM 1070 D ENGL 1020 MATH 1060 C 6 Total Credits = ____ Total QP = ____
To calculate GPA, divide the total quality points by the total quality hours: TQP/TQH = GPA Using the grades on the previous slide, try to calculate Sally’s fall and spring GPA. What was Sally’s fall GPA? What was Sally’s spring GPA? fall GPA ______ spring GPA ______

To the right is an example of the 2018-19 curriculum worksheet for BSN students. Sally’s fall and spring grades have been entered in the appropriate spaces *Notice the total hours, total quality points, and GPA at the bottom left corner.
Comments Note the “D” grade in Chemistry 1070. Per the University Catalog a minimum grade of “C” is required of all biology, chemistry, mathematics and nursing courses. Note the power of a 1-credit class. The student earned an “A” grade in University Studies 1000. This “A” grade, although only from a 1-credit class, generated 4 total quality points (which is greater than the Chemistry 1070 quality points earned).
