APPROACHING OTHERS “Top 10 List”
Presentation transcript:

Approaching Others Show you CARE!

“What If” I did not speak up? Research clearly shows that many serious injuries that have occurred in the past could have been prevented if someone had shown the courage or concern to approach another employee before the tragic event occurred.

What Holds You Back? Approaching others can cause anxiety when you fear rejection. Approaching others is meant to be a constructive dialogue - NOT a criticism.

What Holds You Back? Lack of confidence. Fear of not meeting expectations. Fear of judgement. Uncertainty causes anxiety.

Approach Others One of the hardest things for most people to do is to come up to another person and start a conversation. But, when a conversation is started both people benefit.

Approach Others It is a short conversation that: Demonstrates care Promotes individual responsibility Encourages intervention Highlights a potential exposure/hazard Recognizes safe behaviors Approaching Others Approaching Others is a method of expressing care through a short talk with another person on an exposure that can be reduced. It is better to approach someone to reduce an exposure than to regret not doing so if the exposure becomes an incident. Key Items for discussion: Explain reasons why you should approach others if you think there is an exposure Describe the consequences of approaching others How can you encourage others to approach others or be receptive to being approached

Approach Others Research also shows that these types of programs must be supported by project leadership - but driven by employees. Approaching Others Approaching Others is a method of expressing care through a short talk with another person on an exposure that can be reduced. It is better to approach someone to reduce an exposure than to regret not doing so if the exposure becomes an incident. Key Items for discussion: Explain reasons why you should approach others if you think there is an exposure Describe the consequences of approaching others How can you encourage others to approach others or be receptive to being approached

Lead by Example Approaching others requires you to lead! Leader have to be: visible intentional active frequent concerned

Lead by Example Approach others with the right attitude: Put a smile on your face. Break down the barriers. Lead with sincere and open feedback. Speak with a attitude. Promote the process with passion

How to Approach Someone 5 steps to get you started: Recognize the risk. (See the Top 10 List.) Take the initiative to begin the conversation. Start with, “Can I ask you a quick question? Did you know that could hurt you?” Share a quick example of how you have seen someone hurt or almost hurt doing the same thing. Say Thank You for listening!

How to Approach Someone Don’t worry about a negative outcome before it occurs. Focus your attention on the present rather than the future.

How to Approach Someone Talk about common ground. Show empathy for the task they perform. Be honest – speak the truth. Develop a mutual understanding. Foster trust. Ask questions.

Why approach others? Learning occurs through conversations. Learning prevents injuries. A learning culture will set the right expectations.

Approach others when you see a co-worker: Top 10 List Approach others when you see a co-worker: Place hands in a position that can be pinched, cut, or crushed. Use cutting tools improperly or without gloves. Walk in the plant while talking on the phone. Work in Machining without ear plugs. Fail to acknowledge a pedestrian and/or PIT operator. Use improper lifting techniques. Walk up or down stairs without using hand rails. Walk in front of a moving vehicle in a parking lot. Block an electrical panel or fire extinguishers. Block an aisle with material, pallets, or maintenance bikes.

SUMMARY We are committed to continuously seeking ways to reduce exposure to injury and improve safety performance. We feel strongly that our project leadership is committed to improve our project Safety performance by supporting, participating and serving as Champions to the Approaching Other Initiative.
