PERSEVERANCE OF THE SAINTS: “They whom God hath accepted in His Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by His Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved.” Westminster Confession

The Assurance of the Saved

The foundation on which assurance is established is God’s ability to do. Jehovah has the power to accomplish His purpose. To make grace abound (2 Cor. 9:8) To multiply the harvest (2 Cor. 9:10-11) Beyond what we ask (Eph. 3:20) To rescue His godly ones (2 Peter 2:5-9)

The foundation on which assurance is established is God’s ability to do. Jehovah is unwaveringly faithful to His words. Does not vacillate (James 1:17, 18) Never lies (Hebrews 6:18) Remains forever faithful (2 Timothy 2:13)

The Holy Spirit reveals that a heart of faith can become a heart of unbelief. A believer can fall away (Luke 8:13). Brethren must guard themselves against an unbelieving heart (Hebrews 3:12-14; 4:11). Branches in Christ who are unfaithful and unfruitful will be severed from Christ. John 15:2, 6 Romans 11:20-23

Why warn Christians if the saved in Christ cannot be eternally lost? Peter warned about becoming entangled again and overcome (2 Peter 2:20-22). Turning a brother back implies that at one time he was where he needed to be spiritually (James 5:19-20). “Run in such a way that you may win” implies that they can run and not win (2 Corinthians 9:24, 25, 27).

The faith that secures salvation steadfastly perseveres by doing God’s will. Good hearts who gain assurance hear the word, hold fast to the word and persevere bearing fruit (Luke 8:15). “Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.” (1 Tim. 4:16)

The faith that secures salvation steadfastly perseveres by doing God’s will. Peter admonished men of faith on how to make certain of their calling in Christ so as not to stumble (2 Peter 1:10-11). John wrote so that children of God may know confidently that they have eternal life (1 John 5:11-13).
